Dr. Supatra Tovar & Chantal Donnelly Season 1 Episode 2

Send us a text

Welcome to another enlightening episode of the ANEW Body Insight Podcast, hosted by Dr. Supatra Tovar and Chantal Donnelly. In this episode, we are thrilled to have Tracey Mallett, a world-renowned fitness and wellness expert, joining us at City Club Los Angeles. Tracey's journey from a passionate dancer in the UK to a global fitness icon is both inspiring and transformative.

Tracey Mallett's journey began in the Midlands of the UK. At 16, she attended a theatre arts school, where her passion for dance transitioned into fitness. Her early exposure to dance conditioning and Pilates, under the guidance of a ballet teacher and Lottie Burke instructor, laid the foundation for her innovative career in fitness.

Tracey offers invaluable fitness advice during the podcast, stressing the importance of walking. She highlights how walking is often underestimated as a form of exercise, yet it is low-impact, burns calories, and promotes overall health. Tracey's own routine includes daily walks with her four dogs, demonstrating how this simple activity can make a significant difference.

Another key piece of advice Tracey shares is the importance of strength training. Although she had intermittently engaged in weight training throughout her life, she now emphasizes its consistency. Strength training, she explains, is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, boosting metabolism, and enhancing overall strength and empowerment.

Tracey's innovative approach to fitness is evident in her Pilates Barre On Demand app. This app offers a variety of fusion fitness workouts with new videos added weekly, making Tracey's expertise accessible to a global audience. Whether you're a longtime follower or new to her workouts, Pilates Barre On Demand provides an excellent platform to experience Tracey's dynamic and effective fitness routines.

Tracey shares an empowering story about meeting a fan in Rome who had been using her app since the COVID-19 pandemic. This fan's journey from discovering Tracey's workouts online to attending a barre workshop in person underscores the profound impact Tracey has on her followers' lives. Such connections, Tracey believes, are what make the fitness industry truly rewarding.

Tracey's success is also attributed to her proactive and innovative mindset. She never wrote a business plan but always followed her instincts, creating solutions needed in the fitness industry. Her emphasis on treating clients as equals and her dedication to mentoring up-and-coming instructors highlight her commitment to fostering a supportive and collaborative fitness community.

For those aspiring to start their fitness journey, Tracey's advice is simple: just move. She encourages finding an activity you enjoy and seeking guidance from qualified professionals. Tracey also acknowledges the challenge of navigating the fitness industry amidst social media influences but emphasizes the importance of choosing educated and experienced trainers.

We are back for the second half of our interview with fitness

00:00:46:12 - 00:00:49:12
celebrity Tracey Mallett.

00:00:49:13 - 00:00:52:13
Yes.

00:00:53:20 - 00:00:56:12
Tracey gave us some illuminating information

00:00:56:12 - 00:00:59:12
on her return to health after her health scare,

00:00:59:13 - 00:01:03:08
and how she bounced back with vigor and vitality.

00:01:03:14 - 00:01:06:02
We are eager to learn more.

00:01:07:02 - 00:01:07:16
Tracey,

00:01:07:16 - 00:01:12:03
last episode we left off with you telling us how you had changed the way

00:01:12:03 - 00:01:15:03
you were eating and exercising as you got older.

00:01:15:04 - 00:01:20:19
Is there one big piece of advice that you would give to people on

00:01:21:06 - 00:01:24:06
how to change things up as they age?

00:01:26:11 - 00:01:28:05
There was lots.

00:01:28:05 - 00:01:30:17
That's why I stuttered there, because there's so many.

00:01:30:17 - 00:01:31:21
This is really hard for me to say

00:01:31:21 - 00:01:34:10
one and I can't say one.

00:01:34:10 - 00:01:37:10
I think one thing is

00:01:37:12 - 00:01:40:12
don't underestimate the power of walking.

00:01:40:21 - 00:01:43:08
We don't think of walking as exercise.

00:01:43:08 - 00:01:46:23
We come from a generation where that wasn't classed as exercise.

00:01:47:21 - 00:01:52:12
And I do really think you underestimate the power of walking because getting,

00:01:53:00 - 00:01:56:14
you know, your steps in a day, walking really does help.

00:01:56:15 - 00:01:58:07
It's low impact.

00:01:58:07 - 00:02:00:21
You're burning energy, burning calories,

00:02:00:21 - 00:02:03:21
energy in and energy out at the end of the day.

00:02:04:02 - 00:02:07:19
We want to bring you back to really simplistic— walking for me,

00:02:07:19 - 00:02:09:08
you know, I walk more.

00:02:09:08 - 00:02:10:06
I've got my dogs.

00:02:10:06 - 00:02:13:06
Four dogs. Yes. Crazy girl, I love dogs.

00:02:13:08 - 00:02:18:08
so I walk a lot with the dogs and traveling a lot.

00:02:18:08 - 00:02:20:20
Walking a lot. And that's made a big difference.

00:02:20:20 - 00:02:23:20
I really feel that we definitely should walk more.

00:02:24:09 - 00:02:27:22
The next thing is something that I've done intermittently

00:02:27:22 - 00:02:31:10
is to all of my life, but not consistently.

00:02:31:16 - 00:02:35:05
The one thing that I have not done consistently in my life,

00:02:35:15 - 00:02:38:15
and that really is picking weights.

00:02:38:17 - 00:02:42:01
I, I started weight training when I was younger,

00:02:42:03 - 00:02:46:05
when I was in my 20s, I met my husband and he was very much into weight training.

00:02:46:07 - 00:02:48:03
He was like, you should do this.

00:02:48:03 - 00:02:49:08
Okay, I'll start doing.

00:02:49:08 - 00:02:51:01
It was like, oh, I don't really like this.

00:02:51:01 - 00:02:54:17
I'd rather do my Pilates, I'd rather do my dancing and da da.

00:02:54:17 - 00:02:58:07
So I've kind of been off and on all my life.

00:02:58:07 - 00:03:01:15
I wouldn't say I've never not done it, but it's not been consistent in my life.

00:03:02:06 - 00:03:06:04
And if I could look back and say something to my former

00:03:06:04 - 00:03:09:23
self, would would have been to be a lot more consistent with weight training.

00:03:10:12 - 00:03:16:07
Because when I was or when I did, I obviously looked better,

00:03:16:07 - 00:03:20:11
I felt stronger, more empowered, and that was one of the things

00:03:20:11 - 00:03:26:02
that I was like, okay, I've got to add that more into my workouts.

00:03:26:14 - 00:03:31:10
And so how I did this was I really, truly

00:03:31:10 - 00:03:34:23
believe exercise should be fun, otherwise you're not going to stick with it.

00:03:34:23 - 00:03:35:19
You're gonna find something.

00:03:35:19 - 00:03:38:02
It's really fun that you really enjoy.

00:03:38:02 - 00:03:39:20
So I didn't want it to be a chore.

00:03:39:20 - 00:03:43:15
So I just added it to what I already love, which obviously, you know,

00:03:43:15 - 00:03:45:02
I love Pilates.

00:03:45:02 - 00:03:48:20
I love doing mat Pilates, living, adding strength training to that.

00:03:49:04 - 00:03:52:07
So I even with all my clients, I do a lot more strength

00:03:52:07 - 00:03:55:07
training now because I've implemented it more into my workouts.

00:03:55:12 - 00:03:57:21
But then I will go into the gym,

00:03:57:21 - 00:03:59:17
I don't do a lot, maybe 20 minutes.

00:03:59:17 - 00:04:04:05
I do really basic stuff, you know, on the pulleys, lift some weights,

00:04:04:06 - 00:04:08:11
but not a huge amount because I implement it into all my other workouts.

00:04:08:21 - 00:04:10:09
But strength training is important.

00:04:10:09 - 00:04:12:08
We need muscle mass increase our muscles,

00:04:12:08 - 00:04:14:18
you know, to increase our metabolism.

00:04:14:18 - 00:04:15:13
We hit 40.

00:04:15:13 - 00:04:18:21
We losing so much muscle mass rapidly every month.

00:04:19:02 - 00:04:21:05
And if we don't take president

00:04:21:05 - 00:04:24:12
at an early age, it's just harder and harder as we age.

00:04:24:23 - 00:04:25:14
Luckily,

00:04:26:13 - 00:04:29:03
I was already in good shape to start it, but I'm working with people

00:04:29:03 - 00:04:31:15
that have never quite trained in their life before. Right?

00:04:31:15 - 00:04:36:20
And now to add it into that life, when they hit 40 and 50,

00:04:37:00 - 00:04:40:12
even 60, I'm actually really proud actually, on my app.

00:04:40:23 - 00:04:43:23
Like I have women from

00:04:44:14 - 00:04:47:05
probably late 20s, early 30s

00:04:47:05 - 00:04:50:05
all the way to in their 70s.

00:04:50:16 - 00:04:53:13
And I want to tell you this quick story because it's really empowering.

00:04:53:13 - 00:04:54:09
Okay.

00:04:54:09 - 00:04:56:10
So just was in Rome

00:04:56:10 - 00:04:58:12
and I did a barre workshop

00:04:58:12 - 00:05:01:12
that I thought was for instructors, and then these three ladies appeared

00:05:02:00 - 00:05:04:01
and they were like one of them specifically.

00:05:04:01 - 00:05:05:14
She was like,

00:05:05:14 - 00:05:11:09
I've been on your app since Covid and I'm your biggest fan.

00:05:11:10 - 00:05:13:04
You know, she's so lovely.

00:05:13:04 - 00:05:16:04
She just came just she wanted to meet me, do the workout.

00:05:16:09 - 00:05:20:13
She was 50, 59.

00:05:20:13 - 00:05:23:01
That's right. Because she happened to have the same birthday as Chris

00:05:23:01 - 00:05:25:16
She turned 60 in August.

00:05:25:16 - 00:05:28:02
She looks amazing.

00:05:28:02 - 00:05:32:16
I was so proud of the fact that she found... and I said, how did you find me?

00:05:32:17 - 00:05:35:07
She said I just went on the internet and you just resonated with me.

00:05:35:07 - 00:05:36:18
And she said, I don't know why.

00:05:36:18 - 00:05:40:01
And like, you've been my savior all the way through Covid

00:05:40:06 - 00:05:41:21
I put your workout on

00:05:41:21 - 00:05:45:11
and it just made me feel good, empowered me, made me feel strong.

00:05:45:14 - 00:05:46:17
And now I'm strength training.

00:05:46:17 - 00:05:49:03
I'm doing my Pilates and I love bar.re

00:05:49:03 - 00:05:50:22
Oh, wasn't that so nice? So sweet.

00:05:50:22 - 00:05:54:05
So I ended up spending the whole afternoon with her .She took me around.

00:05:54:05 - 00:05:55:20
She lives in the middle of Rome.

00:05:55:20 - 00:05:57:12
We went to this tree top.

00:05:57:12 - 00:05:59:04
I mean, like, rooftop place.

00:05:59:04 - 00:06:02:04
And I was like, wow, this is what this industry is about.

00:06:02:04 - 00:06:05:18
It's making connections,  the connections that we've made

00:06:05:20 - 00:06:09:07
us with here and with many in our audience today.

00:06:09:13 - 00:06:14:08
The connections in like it's through health and taking care of ourselves.

00:06:14:08 - 00:06:16:15
So really, isn’t that empowering?

00:06:16:15 - 00:06:19:08
So I have to share that so that it was very empowering.

00:06:19:08 - 00:06:24:04
Well, speaking of empowering, you essentially have built an empire

00:06:24:18 - 00:06:27:21
and we want to know how to do this.

00:06:27:21 - 00:06:30:21
If somebody is aspiring to do something like you're doing,

00:06:31:06 - 00:06:32:18
what steps did you take?

00:06:32:18 - 00:06:35:00
How did you—how did it all come together for you?

00:06:36:04 - 00:06:37:07
I think, and I have

00:06:37:07 - 00:06:40:14
to admit, I've never, ever written a business plan in my life.

00:06:41:02 - 00:06:41:22
Ever.

00:06:41:22 - 00:06:44:22
I never have. I’m a very, um

00:06:45:22 - 00:06:46:21
I run by the seat—

00:06:46:21 - 00:06:48:10
You know, I run by the seat of my pants

00:06:48:10 - 00:06:50:22
I, I’m just— I'm a doer.

00:06:50:22 - 00:06:53:17
There's so many people in our world, they are not doers.

00:06:53:17 - 00:06:57:15
They’re procrastinators that sit on their ass. Can I say that?  And don't

00:06:58:13 - 00:06:59:15
and don't do anything about it.

00:06:59:15 - 00:07:02:06
They’re dreamers. Well,

00:07:02:06 - 00:07:04:13
you got to get off your ass and do something about it.

00:07:04:13 - 00:07:07:04
And I'm a I'm a very proactive person.

00:07:07:04 - 00:07:11:02
I think the reason why I have been successful

00:07:11:12 - 00:07:14:07
is because I create a solution

00:07:14:07 - 00:07:17:21
that is needed in the workplace, in the fitness industry.

00:07:18:08 - 00:07:19:21
I am very creative.

00:07:19:21 - 00:07:22:18
I am an innovator within the industry.

00:07:22:18 - 00:07:24:04
You are really creative.

00:07:24:04 - 00:07:26:12
Yeah, and I feel like I am an innovator.

00:07:26:12 - 00:07:27:19
I've always been ahead of the curve.

00:07:27:19 - 00:07:31:05
I could have predicted what's going on right now in the industry.

00:07:31:10 - 00:07:33:02
I'm always like a step ahead.

00:07:34:19 - 00:07:37:06
I don't know what that's a gift to talent or whatever.

00:07:37:06 - 00:07:42:16
And I also feel like I treat people on my level.

00:07:42:20 - 00:07:46:16
So if I go and teach courses or I'm teaching my clients , I’m one of them,

00:07:46:21 - 00:07:50:11
I just have a little bit more experience in why they're coming to me, but I don't.

00:07:50:18 - 00:07:53:20
I've never looked down upon them and never talk down to them.

00:07:53:20 - 00:07:57:15
I talk on their level because I'm an expert in this.

00:07:57:17 - 00:08:02:04
They're an expert in everything else, and I like you to be heard.

00:08:02:04 - 00:08:04:01
It's not all about me.

00:08:04:01 - 00:08:06:13
We talked about this early on. I am really an introvert.

00:08:06:13 - 00:08:07:21
You might think I'm an extrovert right

00:08:07:21 - 00:08:11:10
now, but this is a lot for me to be able to sit here and be open,

00:08:11:15 - 00:08:15:22
and then I shrink away and go back home into my little, you know, home. So.

00:08:15:22 - 00:08:21:23
But I think it is it's just giving people the place to talk to be you.

00:08:23:00 - 00:08:25:03
Because it's not about me, it's about you

00:08:25:03 - 00:08:29:10
and building that empire was really a about that.

00:08:29:10 - 00:08:33:01
I think in the community the people I’ve brought, the friendships

00:08:33:01 - 00:08:36:03
that I've made, that has driven me to keep on going,

00:08:36:12 - 00:08:40:08
to keep on moving, because after Covid God, that was so hard.

00:08:40:19 - 00:08:45:09
The fitness industry was so bad, like bootybarre was like booming.

00:08:45:19 - 00:08:48:12
And then all of a sudden it went, poof. Gone. Poof.

00:08:48:12 - 00:08:50:08
I was like,

00:08:50:08 - 00:08:53:02
yeah, exactly. Gone.

00:08:53:02 - 00:08:55:02
You like you work so hard.

00:08:55:02 - 00:08:56:15
And then it’s gone. Yeah.

00:08:56:15 - 00:08:59:04
And then things changed and then the fitness industry changed.

00:08:59:04 - 00:09:01:21
And you're like, well, I could sit down on my ass.

00:09:01:21 - 00:09:02:12
Said that a lot.

00:09:02:12 - 00:09:07:07
Now I could sit here and just like, let it go and just disappear into the woodwork.

00:09:07:11 - 00:09:10:08
Or I can just like, okay, I got a hustle, I got to pivot, I got to move,

00:09:12:04 - 00:09:12:13
which we

00:09:12:13 - 00:09:17:09
all have, I pivoted, moved and went into something else.

00:09:18:01 - 00:09:22:13
And now I'm coming back into this because it's all like Pilates,  barrre, fitness.

00:09:22:21 - 00:09:23:12
It's all the same

00:09:23:12 - 00:09:25:16
canvas, it’sis how you paint it.

00:09:25:16 - 00:09:31:07
So I have a big presence within the educational department. I teach,

00:09:31:17 - 00:09:34:17
I mentor a lot of up and coming instructors,

00:09:35:11 - 00:09:37:01
but then I also work with the consumers.

00:09:37:01 - 00:09:38:04
So I'm not only with

00:09:38:04 - 00:09:41:20
the consumers that want to look great or want to feel empowered, whatever.

00:09:42:01 - 00:09:45:03
But I'm also educating the next line up of instructors coming

00:09:45:03 - 00:09:48:03
up, which I think is really important, and I really enjoy doing that.

00:09:48:03 - 00:09:49:08
It's really smart.

00:09:49:08 - 00:09:50:15
So if I could sum it up:

00:09:50:15 - 00:09:53:02
It's having foresight,

00:09:53:02 - 00:09:57:14
it's being a problem solver, kind of figuring out

00:09:57:15 - 00:10:00:06
where can I go next and pivoting.

00:10:00:06 - 00:10:01:20
It's about collaboration

00:10:02:20 - 00:10:04:21
and it's about commiseration.

00:10:04:21 - 00:10:08:17
It's about being with the people that you are trying

00:10:08:17 - 00:10:11:17
to reach rather than being above them, being with them.

00:10:12:17 - 00:10:13:21
You got it girl. Psychologist

00:10:13:21 - 00:10:16:21
learn how to summarize really well., don’t they?

00:10:18:03 - 00:10:19:10
It’s what I do all day.

00:10:19:10 - 00:10:22:10
So what I'm hearing is, hmm stroke my beard.

00:10:22:11 - 00:10:24:06
I love that. That’s so true

00:10:24:06 - 00:10:28:08
Collaboration is the biggest community. And being heard? Yes.

00:10:28:15 - 00:10:30:18
And Inot shoved into a corner. Exactly.

00:10:30:18 - 00:10:32:04
We are all equal.

00:10:32:04 - 00:10:33:06
Exactly.

00:10:33:06 - 00:10:34:04
Love that.

00:10:34:04 - 00:10:35:19
Fantastic.

00:10:35:19 - 00:10:38:06
Love it.

00:10:38:06 - 00:10:40:11
So if someone was struggling

00:10:40:11 - 00:10:45:05
with starting an exercise program, do you have any advice for them?

00:10:45:05 - 00:10:46:17
Just move. Enough.

00:10:46:17 - 00:10:49:12
Just move. Just move. Just walk.

00:10:49:12 - 00:10:51:20
Just find something that you enjoy.

00:10:51:20 - 00:10:53:19
I think I said that earlier on, but walking.

00:10:53:19 - 00:10:56:03
Just moving and find something you enjoy.

00:10:56:03 - 00:10:59:08
But also I'm big on this really.

00:10:59:08 - 00:11:01:20
Don't— find someone that's qualified.

00:11:01:20 - 00:11:04:20
Find somebody that's, you know, got experience in this.

00:11:04:22 - 00:11:09:10
Find somebody that's done  their homework and is educated.

00:11:11:09 - 00:11:13:18
Unfortunately, the industry is a little bit

00:11:13:18 - 00:11:17:14
fickle, a little bit fake now because of social media..

00:11:17:22 - 00:11:20:15
And then we have all these social media fitness

00:11:20:15 - 00:11:23:23
stars who have no background but look absolutely fantastic.

00:11:23:23 - 00:11:25:06
So you want to look like that person,

00:11:25:06 - 00:11:28:06
but then they have no background to support it.

00:11:28:15 - 00:11:30:18
That is the major problem right now.

00:11:30:18 - 00:11:33:20
So if you are a newbie out there, make sure you find somebody

00:11:33:20 - 00:11:37:12
that you, you know, that listens to you or

00:11:38:23 - 00:11:41:18
can work with on your problems that you need.

00:11:41:18 - 00:11:44:11
I think that's I know you guys will agree with me on that.

00:11:44:11 - 00:11:45:21
Most people out there will too.

00:11:45:21 - 00:11:46:12
Absolutely.

00:11:46:12 - 00:11:50:19
And I think a lot of people think that you have to exercise

00:11:50:19 - 00:11:57:01
as a form of punishment to work off the, you know, donut you ate yesterday.

00:11:57:01 - 00:12:01:17
And I always, you know, recommend people to find something that they love

00:12:02:01 - 00:12:05:18
because when they move and they love what they're doing in their movement,

00:12:05:22 - 00:12:07:08
they're going to keep doing it.

00:12:07:08 - 00:12:11:15
If you do it as punishment, it's not sustainable.

00:12:11:20 - 00:12:14:17
So I love that you say tha. t I still like I love,

00:12:14:17 - 00:12:17:17
I love spinning, I used to teach it years ago.

00:12:17:19 - 00:12:20:03
So every week I go and do my SoulCycle class,

00:12:20:03 - 00:12:24:19
I get just to sit on a bike and just move with the music and not teach anybody

00:12:25:02 - 00:12:28:11
just to zone out and try and compete with the younger generation.

00:12:28:11 - 00:12:30:11
Like, I was like, I can do this.

00:12:30:11 - 00:12:31:07
I just love it.

00:12:31:07 - 00:12:35:12
This is fun for me, I like it, so I'm going to keep on doing it.

00:12:35:12 - 00:12:37:16
Yeah, it's find something that you love, right?

00:12:37:16 - 00:12:39:11
This is how I found Pilates.

00:12:39:11 - 00:12:42:21
I did one Pilates video and I was like, yes,

00:12:43:10 - 00:12:45:22
oh my gosh, I love this so much.

00:12:45:22 - 00:12:47:17
I need to do this forever.

00:12:47:17 - 00:12:49:13
So I might as well become an instructor.

00:12:50:16 - 00:12:52:12
And so I did this one video.

00:12:52:12 - 00:12:57:01
I came to Tracey because I knew that she had a certification at ATP,

00:12:57:13 - 00:13:00:05
and she asked me if I had ever done plays before.

00:13:00:05 - 00:13:03:05
And I said once

00:13:04:06 - 00:13:07:06
she was like, maybe you should take a class with me first.

00:13:07:13 - 00:13:11:02
So I did, I do the class and I was like, I'm hooked, I am hooked.

00:13:11:12 - 00:13:15:18
But what would you say to the person who can’t afford to do a certification

00:13:15:18 - 00:13:20:16
course or can't afford to do, you know, privates or group Pilates?

00:13:20:16 - 00:13:24:15
Well, that's why one of the reasons I said I did the app as well

00:13:24:15 - 00:13:28:04
because it's affordable exercise, you know, I mean, if you think about it,

00:13:28:11 - 00:13:32:20
I think my app is, what, $24.99 or if you

00:13:33:11 - 00:13:36:00
you know, if you buy a year, it works out a lot less.

00:13:36:00 - 00:13:39:22
I mean, if you go and have Starbucks every day, that's more than that.

00:13:39:23 - 00:13:43:19
It's not expensive, you know, I bring new workouts every week.

00:13:43:19 - 00:13:46:16
And I think it's more affordable for people.

00:13:48:05 - 00:13:50:03
I mean, there's also obviously YouTube.

00:13:50:03 - 00:13:52:06
I mean, there's so many free workouts on there.

00:13:52:06 - 00:13:55:06
There's so much at your fingertips now

00:13:55:07 - 00:13:57:23
that there really is no excuse to find something that you like.

00:13:57:23 - 00:14:00:20
But then we go back to just make sure you're doing

00:14:00:20 - 00:14:05:09
the right thing for your body, because there is so much out there to choose from

00:14:05:19 - 00:14:09:05
that sometimes that gets a little bit in a weird predicament, you know?

00:14:09:07 - 00:14:10:20
But yeah.

00:14:10:20 - 00:14:11:07
Okay.

00:14:11:07 - 00:14:14:07
So YouTube, there's the app.

00:14:14:11 - 00:14:17:03
I think that there's plenty of places,

00:14:17:03 - 00:14:20:03
you know, there's rec centers as well.

00:14:20:06 - 00:14:22:14
the YMCA, there's a lot of places

00:14:22:14 - 00:14:26:15
where you can go to find affordable, ways to get fit.

00:14:26:18 - 00:14:29:18
How do people find you?

00:14:30:01 - 00:14:32:00
Really social media mostly.

00:14:32:00 - 00:14:34:21
Can you tell us how they how they would find you on social media?

00:14:34:21 - 00:14:36:12
Well, I love Instagram.

00:14:36:12 - 00:14:37:15
Well, I love to hate it.

00:14:37:15 - 00:14:40:16
I shouldn't say that . I love I love what Instagram's done

00:14:40:16 - 00:14:44:05
because it's enabled me to meet so many people.

00:14:44:05 - 00:14:47:05
The fact that I have to post all the time is a bit challenging.

00:14:47:10 - 00:14:50:17
I am transparent again, it's hard you’re having to keep up all the time.

00:14:50:17 - 00:14:52:06
Feel like when those little gerbil

00:14:52:06 - 00:14:55:23
hamsters on the wheel and they just like trying to keep up all the time

00:14:55:23 - 00:14:59:03
and and all the algorithms keep changing all the time.

00:14:59:03 - 00:15:01:12
One minute they want you to be real, the next minute

00:15:01:12 - 00:15:02:20
they want you not to be real.

00:15:02:20 - 00:15:05:14
The next minute they want you to be this. And that is very challenging.

00:15:05:14 - 00:15:09:16
But Instagram and obviously social media—collecting,

00:15:09:16 - 00:15:13:19
from a marketing point of view, collecting as many emails as you can

00:15:13:19 - 00:15:17:09
is a great way of of, you know, sending emails out to people.

00:15:17:09 - 00:15:21:08
If they open them, that would be great, but at least it's into their inbox.

00:15:21:17 - 00:15:23:07
And that's where you where most people find me.

00:15:23:07 - 00:15:26:23
But also I've been in the industry for such a long time that

00:15:27:23 - 00:15:30:23
I don't realize, honestly,

00:15:30:23 - 00:15:33:03
how well-known I am

00:15:33:03 - 00:15:36:10
because I'm on other apps, like Pilates Any Time,

00:15:36:10 - 00:15:40:16
which is an amazing app, and they have the best of the best Pilates

00:15:40:16 - 00:15:44:22
people in the world —are all amazing trainers, and that was started

00:15:44:22 - 00:15:49:18
by a very good friend of mine 15 years ago, and I went on there to help her.

00:15:50:07 - 00:15:52:20
And now actually, it's been one of the most

00:15:52:20 - 00:15:56:12
amazing experiences for me because it's actually helped me.

00:15:56:23 - 00:16:00:23
I went on there to help her and it reversely helped me.

00:16:01:13 - 00:16:04:13
And so being on that, it's

00:16:04:13 - 00:16:07:15
they've got millions, you know, so many, subscribers.

00:16:07:18 - 00:16:11:09
I think that's really helped too a lot because I'm on a legit

00:16:11:20 - 00:16:15:10
going back to a legit platform now. Yes.

00:16:17:05 - 00:16:19:09
Well, tell us, you know,

00:16:19:09 - 00:16:22:09
what is inspiring you this year.

00:16:22:16 - 00:16:23:23
And it can be anything.

00:16:23:23 - 00:16:27:20
It can be, a book that you've read, podcasts that you listen to,

00:16:28:06 - 00:16:32:07
what is fueling you right now and bringing you joy.

00:16:33:20 - 00:16:34:11
I have to say.

00:16:34:11 - 00:16:37:17
Well, from a from  a professional point of view.

00:16:37:22 - 00:16:41:06
I love that the fact that the Pilates industry has grown a lot,

00:16:41:16 - 00:16:44:16
and I would like to give back to the

00:16:45:00 - 00:16:47:10
the new up and coming instructors

00:16:47:10 - 00:16:51:19
because I feel that the Pilates industry is taking a big hit.

00:16:52:05 - 00:16:55:07
It becomes a little bit more fitness orientated.

00:16:55:07 - 00:16:59:15
As much as I am in the fitness industry, I don't like the way it's going

00:16:59:21 - 00:17:00:14
and we have to

00:17:00:14 - 00:17:05:00
and I can talk to you candidly about that because you're both certified

00:17:05:03 - 00:17:09:10
and gone through Pilates training, so there's a lot of franchises out there.

00:17:09:10 - 00:17:14:23
They’re great but also we got to remember where it derives from.

00:17:15:03 - 00:17:18:17
So we need to have better education for our next instructors coming up.

00:17:19:01 - 00:17:22:01
That inspires me to keep moving.

00:17:22:03 - 00:17:26:21
My my dogs inspire me, you know?

00:17:26:21 - 00:17:29:23
Ditto! I know I had to go there,

00:17:29:23 - 00:17:34:13
I don't know, I always remember saying, it's probably about ten years ago.

00:17:34:13 - 00:17:35:05
I said, you know what?

00:17:35:05 - 00:17:37:15
One day I'm gonna have a house full of dogs.

00:17:37:15 - 00:17:39:06
I'm going to be really happy

00:17:39:06 - 00:17:42:21
because I love being around dogs, because they make me feel so happy.

00:17:43:16 - 00:17:46:22
And now I've got four dogs and I'm like, how did that happen?

00:17:46:22 - 00:17:50:09
It’s a dream within a dream.

00:17:50:09 - 00:17:53:22
Is it! Because they love you no matter what that ! You can

00:17:53:22 - 00:17:59:05
you can be, you know, gross and lying in bed and they'll just come up

00:17:59:05 - 00:18:04:03
and cuddle you and love you and make and cheer you up and inspire you.

00:18:04:03 - 00:18:07:14
They get you outside. Adopt. Don't shop.

00:18:07:14 - 00:18:12:06
I'm sorry, I'm a big person on that because I own my dogs pretty much.

00:18:12:06 - 00:18:15:11
I rescued—one was from Tijuana on the streets.

00:18:15:21 - 00:18:18:06
The other one there was four little shepherds and

00:18:18:06 - 00:18:21:06
Amber decided that we were going to rescue them.

00:18:21:06 - 00:18:25:08
We did rescue four shepherds, which happened to be full on shepherds.

00:18:25:14 - 00:18:27:13
We found homes for three of them.

00:18:27:13 - 00:18:28:21
My doctor took one of them.

00:18:28:21 - 00:18:30:09
One of my friends.

00:18:30:09 - 00:18:32:15
Grandma— I got great homes for them.

00:18:32:15 - 00:18:35:08
But then there was Lily and she’s got these beautiful eyes.

00:18:35:08 - 00:18:37:17
I'm like, okay, you're mine.

00:18:37:17 - 00:18:41:17
So that was the fourth one. I'm not having any more because they killed my house.

00:18:44:22 - 00:18:45:22
But I'm happy.

00:18:45:22 - 00:18:46:21
So there you go.

00:18:46:21 - 00:18:48:18
It doesn't matter about the house, does it?

00:18:48:18 - 00:18:50:01
It makes me happy.

00:18:50:01 - 00:18:51:04
Whatever makes you happy.

00:18:51:04 - 00:18:53:07
Exactly it’s where you're focused, right now.

00:18:53:07 - 00:18:55:17
And we were so happy having you here.

00:18:55:17 - 00:18:58:15
Thank you so much.

00:18:58:15 - 00:19:05:23
We, I think, really want to know, where people can find you if they're interested

00:19:05:23 - 00:19:10:18
in knowing more about you, where they can go to find out about you.

00:19:10:18 - 00:19:12:06
If you could let us know that.

00:19:12:06 - 00:19:12:17
Yeah.

00:19:12:17 - 00:19:17:10
Obviously, Instagram @TraceyMallett or at Pilates

00:19:17:10 - 00:19:22:18
Barre on Demand is my app or website, and I put up new workouts every week.

00:19:22:18 - 00:19:25:06
There's like 500 videos on there,

00:19:25:06 - 00:19:29:04
lots of programs, including the one that my beautiful friend here, Chantal’s in.

00:19:29:12 - 00:19:34:02
And she's also in the bootybarre video because it has the old videos in there, too.

00:19:34:05 - 00:19:36:06
Oh my God! Has all the retro videos!

00:19:36:06 - 00:19:41:22
Yeah, not that, old actually like—Were we in our 30s when I did that?

00:19:43:10 - 00:19:43:20
it was

00:19:43:20 - 00:19:47:22
actually bootybarre actually is actually 15 years old actually next

00:19:47:22 - 00:19:51:02
year, turns 15 bootybarre and I did

00:19:51:02 - 00:19:54:02
certifiy 8000 instructors globally.

00:19:54:18 - 00:19:57:17
So yeah. I know, iIsn’t it crazy?

00:19:57:17 - 00:20:00:14
And yeah, 15 years.

00:20:00:14 - 00:20:03:16
So I think it's about 15 years old.

00:20:03:16 - 00:20:06:16
Girl. Yeah. Amazing.

00:20:06:23 - 00:20:09:16
So you gotta look at that video, the app just to look at Chantal.

00:20:09:16 - 00:20:15:13
So we would love to open it up to questions from the audience.

00:20:16:03 - 00:20:18:23
So does anybody have a question? Come on up.

00:20:18:23 - 00:20:21:21
I've learned so much, but I'm curious how you see

00:20:21:21 - 00:20:24:22
where Pilates has been and where it's going in the future.

00:20:25:04 - 00:20:29:20
Pilates is, is mind and body is where your mind meets your body.

00:20:30:04 - 00:20:33:22
And I think Pilates has got a little bit too extrinsic

00:20:34:11 - 00:20:39:09
and not about the mental focus, which we all know is so important.

00:20:39:23 - 00:20:43:16
And because the younger demographic have really taken,

00:20:44:00 - 00:20:47:08
a liking to Pilates

00:20:47:08 - 00:20:51:01
because of the social media influencers,

00:20:52:10 - 00:20:55:08
it's not necessarily the things I see on social media.

00:20:55:08 - 00:20:56:05
The says Pilates.

00:20:56:05 - 00:20:56:11
I'm like,

00:20:56:11 - 00:21:00:06
that's not Pilates, you know, it's it's a little disconcerting in that way.

00:21:00:19 - 00:21:03:17
So I feel where it's come from

00:21:03:17 - 00:21:06:17
is an amazing place, but where it's going to

00:21:07:10 - 00:21:09:16
it needs a little help,

00:21:09:16 - 00:21:12:09
which is where I feel like I fit in

00:21:12:09 - 00:21:16:20
because I've rode the fitness industry, I rode the Pilates industry.

00:21:16:20 - 00:21:21:16
I fit in both molds, but I really, truly kind of meet in the middle

00:21:22:00 - 00:21:25:18
and I think I'm a good advocate to where it comes from.

00:21:25:18 - 00:21:27:14
But I also know where it's going to

00:21:27:14 - 00:21:29:14
and try and get those peoplewhere they're like,

00:21:29:14 - 00:21:32:21
right on the wrong side to bring them back somewhere in the middle,

00:21:32:22 - 00:21:36:14
it to be a little bit more moderate with what they're teaching,

00:21:36:14 - 00:21:39:14
if they're going to call it Pilates.

00:21:39:18 - 00:21:44:00
And already in my little small town that I live at, you remember,

00:21:44:00 - 00:21:47:13
I've had the studio for 25 years in our little town,

00:21:47:23 - 00:21:50:23
and now all of a sudden, in the last

00:21:51:13 - 00:21:53:20
seven months, we've got

00:21:53:20 - 00:21:57:07
three Pilatess tudios in like a two mile radius.

00:21:58:12 - 00:22:00:08
So interesting

00:22:00:08 - 00:22:05:04
how that has arisen, because you got gotta understand the industry.

00:22:05:04 - 00:22:06:22
And I've been in this a long time.

00:22:06:22 - 00:22:09:09
It all goes in circles.

00:22:09:09 - 00:22:10:04
It’ll all fade out.

00:22:10:04 - 00:22:13:15
When I started Booty Barre 15 years ago, there was no one doing barre

00:22:13:20 - 00:22:16:16
and then all of a sudden there was dat dat dat dat dat dat.

00:22:16:16 - 00:22:20:15
And all those barre studios arepretty much gone, except for maybe one.

00:22:21:13 - 00:22:23:16
And now it's Pilates dat dat dat dat dat.

00:22:23:16 - 00:22:27:13
And so it's just interesting for me because I've been in there.

00:22:27:13 - 00:22:31:08
So my goal and I want to tell you that I will be teaching a lot of teacher

00:22:31:08 - 00:22:35:03
training programs, which I have been touring. I did a global tour this year.

00:22:35:03 - 00:22:37:15
I've been to Rome, I've been to Korea four times.

00:22:37:15 - 00:22:41:01
I've been to all over the US, England.

00:22:41:09 - 00:22:43:19
I just— anywhere. I've been a lot of places

00:22:45:03 - 00:22:47:16
teaching a little bit more contemporary

00:22:47:16 - 00:22:50:20
Pilates, however, it is always derived

00:22:50:20 - 00:22:53:21
from where it's supposed to come from, because I think that's really important.

00:22:53:21 - 00:22:55:07
But I'm also going to be doing

00:22:55:07 - 00:22:58:09
teacher training programs for people that want to be Pilates instructors.

00:22:58:10 - 00:23:00:17
I feel like that's what I should be doing.

00:23:00:17 - 00:23:02:08
Wonderful.

00:23:02:08 - 00:23:02:20
Thank you.

00:23:02:20 - 00:23:05:05
Any other questions?

00:23:05:05 - 00:23:07:12
Come on down the mike’s over here.

00:23:07:12 - 00:23:10:12
Don't be shy! You mentioned men

00:23:10:15 - 00:23:14:17
and I work at the community services, City of Rancho,

00:23:15:04 - 00:23:18:09
and I noticed when the guys are filing

00:23:18:10 - 00:23:22:09
in all women, maybe 1 or 2 of them guys,

00:23:22:22 - 00:23:25:22
and I talk to them because I want to know more.

00:23:26:09 - 00:23:29:16
How do you market to men and

00:23:29:16 - 00:23:33:23
well, what kind of results do you are you getting when you, you know,

00:23:34:08 - 00:23:37:05
take on a particular group or,

00:23:37:05 - 00:23:41:00
you know, what's your plan or how do you determine your plan?

00:23:41:13 - 00:23:44:02
I think it's a great question because,

00:23:44:02 - 00:23:47:11
you know, Joseph Pilates, we go from a Pilates point of view.

00:23:47:11 - 00:23:49:20
He was a man, he was a boxer.

00:23:49:20 - 00:23:52:20
And really no one knows that hardly, he was a boxer.

00:23:53:01 - 00:23:54:15
He was an athlete.

00:23:54:15 - 00:23:57:23
And so a lot of his work was very calisthenics.

00:23:57:23 - 00:24:01:02
It was very, very impactful.

00:24:01:02 - 00:24:04:14
It was very actually quite ballistic to a certain extent.

00:24:04:14 - 00:24:09:02
You've see, you know, and people and it was derived from men at the beginning.

00:24:09:23 - 00:24:13:19
But what happened is that women kind of went to the studio

00:24:13:19 - 00:24:16:22
in New York, and then people in the dance community took it over.

00:24:16:22 - 00:24:18:17
So they thought it was just for women.

00:24:18:17 - 00:24:21:18
But it's really not it's, it's for it's

00:24:21:18 - 00:24:24:21
for men and women, you know,. Men with back problems.

00:24:24:21 - 00:24:27:12
I've, I've found the ones that are there.

00:24:27:12 - 00:24:31:23
They're there for a reason, not just to while away the, the time.

00:24:32:08 - 00:24:34:06
It's serving a purpose.

00:24:34:06 - 00:24:34:20
So are you?

00:24:34:20 - 00:24:36:17
Are you doing Pilates now,? Am I?

00:24:36:17 - 00:24:37:18
I'm not doing it.

00:24:37:18 - 00:24:43:17
But I— You should! HahaI should.  You are now!

00:24:43:22 - 00:24:47:10
if I've done one good thing in this podcast, I've inspired you, sir.

00:24:47:14 - 00:24:49:07
You know, to start Pilates.

00:24:49:07 - 00:24:51:23
Yes. Because honestly, probably one the best things that you can do

00:24:51:23 - 00:24:56:09
if you have back problems, spinal stabilization, absolutely.

00:24:56:09 - 00:24:57:14
You should be doing it.

00:24:57:14 - 00:25:01:05
This is not just for women.  I’ll do it anyway, because I like to work out so. There you go.

00:25:02:00 - 00:25:07:10
But they're there because they, you know, they hobble out of there. They hobble out of there!

00:25:07:10 - 00:25:09:18
With their injury. This

00:25:09:18 - 00:25:11:06
is this is actually quite funny.

00:25:11:06 - 00:25:14:21
My son is 20 and like he's an athlete right.

00:25:14:21 - 00:25:16:13
And I've been telling him since as a little kid,

00:25:16:13 - 00:25:18:08
you know, you should do Pilates. You’re an athlete.

00:25:18:08 - 00:25:20:15
You should do it. Guess what?

00:25:20:15 - 00:25:22:15
He loves Pilates now.

00:25:22:15 - 00:25:26:07
So it only  took me this long and maybe because he's on social media,

00:25:26:07 - 00:25:30:00
all the cute girls are doing it like, oh, I think I'll try it now.

00:25:30:00 - 00:25:30:16
You see him?

00:25:30:16 - 00:25:34:02
He goes into the into the Pilates studio and he's doing his exercises

00:25:34:08 - 00:25:35:12
because, wow, this is so good.

00:25:35:12 - 00:25:36:16
I can feel my abs.

00:25:36:16 - 00:25:39:00
I'm like, God, it's only took me this long.

00:25:39:00 - 00:25:39:10
There you go.

00:25:39:10 - 00:25:40:11
That's awesome.

00:25:40:11 - 00:25:43:08
Next generation.

00:25:43:08 - 00:25:45:16
Well, we are out of time now.

00:25:45:16 - 00:25:49:08
