Unlocking Holistic Health: Yan Weng’s Journey from 9/11 Survivor to Reiki Master

At 14, Yan discovered a rapidly growing lump on her chest, leading to biopsies and surgery. This challenging period taught her the importance of a healthy body and mind, planting the seeds for her future dedication to holistic health practices.
Yan recounts her experience during the 9/11 attacks while working at the World Trade Center. She describes the chaos and fear of that day, and how her practice of qigong helped her stay calm and make clear decisions amidst the disaster. This experience reinforced her belief in the power of holistic practices to maintain mental and physical well-being in times of crisis.
Yan's journey into Reiki began after a scooter accident that left her with severe neck and shoulder pain. A friend's recommendation led her to a Reiki session that dramatically reduced her pain and inspired her to pursue Reiki training. Yan explains that Reiki is a holistic technique that reduces stress and enhances relaxation by restoring balance to the entire system. Unlike qigong, which requires years of practice to master, Reiki uses the universal life force energy to promote healing.
Yan's approach to Reiki involves both hands-on and remote healing techniques. She explains that Reiki practitioners channel universal life force energy rather than using their own energy, which allows them to heal others without depleting their own energy. This method has profound benefits for both the practitioner and the recipient, promoting a sense of deep relaxation and well-being.
Yan shares a story about a student who was able to calm her agitation and gain a new perspective on a stressful situation through Reiki practice. This example highlights how Reiki can help individuals manage stress and improve their mental clarity, making it a valuable tool for busy professionals.
Yan’s passion for teaching Reiki led her to offer workshops and classes, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. She trained her family to boost their immune systems and started offering online Reiki courses to help others find balance and strength during challenging times.

I have many, many experiences,
00:02:49:04 - 00:02:52:21
but also facing quite a lot of challenges
in life and struggles.
00:02:53:22 - 00:02:58:13
But I just very blessed
to have those experiences.

When I came here at the 12 years old,
00:03:02:17 - 00:03:05:17
from China to the US,
00:03:05:28 - 00:03:09:09
shortly two years after I lived here.
00:03:10:00 - 00:03:12:00
When I went to the doctor's appointment,
00:03:13:02 - 00:03:15:12
she told me that there was a,
00:03:15:12 - 00:03:18:27
lump growing rapidly on my left chest.
00:03:19:19 - 00:03:22:19
And I was 14 at the time,
00:03:22:20 - 00:03:27:09
and going to doctors appointments
and biopsies became part of my life.
00:03:27:27 - 00:03:33:11
And sometimes waiting in the doctor's
office and waiting for the results.
00:03:33:24 - 00:03:36:16
It was nerve wracking.
00:03:36:16 - 00:03:38:14
Eventually, after the biopsies
00:03:38:14 - 00:03:41:14
and all that, the doctor mentioned
00:03:41:25 - 00:03:44:04
to recommend actually a surgery
00:03:44:04 - 00:03:48:04
because the the lump is growing
too fast in order
00:03:48:04 - 00:03:51:17
to prevent it from turning into a cancer
to breast cancer.
00:03:51:29 - 00:03:54:29
They decided to remove the tumor.
00:03:55:21 - 00:03:58:05
So at that time, I was very scared
00:03:58:05 - 00:04:01:09
and I didn't want to have cancer.
00:04:01:09 - 00:04:06:06
So my mom and I, we among
the family, decided to have to have
00:04:06:06 - 00:04:07:15
the surgery.
00:04:07:15 - 00:04:11:26
And I remember right after the surgery,
even the simplest
00:04:12:08 - 00:04:16:03
task of putting my clothes on
felt like a challenge.
00:04:16:04 - 00:04:19:00
I was just feeling the pain
and all of that.
00:04:19:00 - 00:04:21:07
And at that moment I realized that
00:04:21:07 - 00:04:24:07
without a healthy body and mind,
00:04:24:14 - 00:04:28:10
nothing can be done
successfully on a sustaining level.
00:04:28:27 - 00:04:35:02
Especially I was I was hiding my emotions
like my anxiety, my fear.
00:04:35:02 - 00:04:37:20
I just feel like I have to be tough.
00:04:37:20 - 00:04:40:20
So I was hiding a lot of those emotions.
00:04:40:23 - 00:04:43:16
But looking back,
I knew those emotions were
00:04:43:16 - 00:04:46:16
also not very good for me in the long
term.
00:04:46:27 - 00:04:51:14
And I was I'm very blessed
that during my adult life
00:04:51:14 - 00:04:56:15
that I was able to learn
qigong, yoga, and later on with Reiki,
00:04:57:14 - 00:04:59:08
and it completely changed my
00:04:59:08 - 00:05:03:02
life because before, when I was younger,
00:05:03:02 - 00:05:06:14
I was feeling useless and hopeless
during those times.
00:05:07:07 - 00:05:09:19
And then because of this
00:05:09:19 - 00:05:13:05
holistic practices,
I don't feel that way anymore.
00:05:13:18 - 00:05:16:06
And actually it gave me
00:05:16:06 - 00:05:20:11
that juice,
you know, to really sustain me.
00:05:20:11 - 00:05:23:09
And so I can really like ride the waves.
00:05:23:09 - 00:05:27:28
And even though, like, lots of things
might be happening because life is like
00:05:27:28 - 00:05:33:01
three struggles right, ourselves, others
and the environment or the circumstances.
00:05:33:12 - 00:05:38:24
So but I'm just very blessed to have that,
and I want to share that with the people
00:05:38:24 - 00:05:42:19
who also wanted to have that amazing life
and that juice that can,
00:05:42:29 - 00:05:47:17
you know, keep us going for the long term
with success and with meaning.
00:05:47:26 - 00:05:53:06
Well, you certainly are full of juice,
I would call that empowerment as well.

You radiate energy.

And I think that that comes
from this practice.

And it's amazing too,
that it came from a darker place.

But you turn that dark place into
something light and something beautiful.

You were, telling me earlier
that you were at Ground Zero.

We want to talk about stress.

We'll talk about ground zero.

Tell us about that day and what you did
to heal yourself and how you did it.
00:06:23:15 - 00:06:26:15
Yes. Thank you for that.
00:06:26:23 - 00:06:29:14
I was in the seven World Trade Center,
00:06:29:14 - 00:06:32:23
the tower that collapsed
during the noontime that day.
00:06:33:28 - 00:06:37:02
I went to the office
a little bit earlier than usual
00:06:37:02 - 00:06:40:26
after the vote,
because it's a beautiful Tuesday morning.
00:06:41:21 - 00:06:44:13
And, so I was getting settle
00:06:44:13 - 00:06:48:24
and everything, doing some of my work,
but all the sudden
00:06:48:24 - 00:06:52:14
I heard this loud rumbling noise, and I.
00:06:52:24 - 00:06:56:14
And then my coffee, the coffee on my table
was like, shaking violently.
00:06:56:29 - 00:06:58:10
I was like, what's going on?
00:06:58:10 - 00:06:59:24
So I looked up
00:06:59:24 - 00:07:03:00
and then I just saw
like a whole bunch of debris,
00:07:03:00 - 00:07:07:20
like all the shards,
like glasses and broken metals
00:07:07:20 - 00:07:12:08
and flying towards from the building
across to our window.
00:07:12:19 - 00:07:15:19
And one some of my colleagues
were, were like,
00:07:15:19 - 00:07:18:14
they went to the window and say like,
what's going on?
00:07:18:14 - 00:07:21:15
And then one of the colleague
actually was like yelling out.
00:07:21:27 - 00:07:25:12
Oh my gosh,
there were airplanes coming at us.
00:07:25:26 - 00:07:29:22
How could the pilot miss
such a big building?
00:07:29:22 - 00:07:32:22
So that was like,
how how could that happen?
00:07:33:07 - 00:07:37:14
And then in the meantime, I was like,
I warn my colleagues just don't
00:07:38:11 - 00:07:42:08
get too close to the window
because all this debris is coming at us.
00:07:42:12 - 00:07:47:23
And at any time it could break in
and shatter to our faces and all that.
00:07:48:05 - 00:07:50:27
So we decided
no one was telling us what to do,
00:07:50:27 - 00:07:52:29
but we know it won't last too long.
00:07:52:29 - 00:07:56:16
So we just decided to
to kind of charted our way
00:07:56:24 - 00:07:59:26
away from the window
and then get out of that building.
00:08:00:29 - 00:08:02:18
and then,
00:08:02:18 - 00:08:04:14
shortly after we got out of the building
00:08:04:14 - 00:08:08:07
waiting to be called to go back
because we thought it was an accident.
00:08:08:28 - 00:08:11:28
And then we heard the second explosion.
00:08:11:28 - 00:08:14:11
And I knew by that time
00:08:14:11 - 00:08:17:11
it was not an accident.
00:08:17:18 - 00:08:21:26
so I was just running away
from the buildings to the north
00:08:21:26 - 00:08:25:10
to to away from the falling debris
and all of that,
00:08:25:10 - 00:08:28:10
and ran for my life.
00:08:30:07 - 00:08:32:20
so after the
00:08:32:20 - 00:08:35:00
escaping from the scene,
00:08:35:00 - 00:08:37:27
we were like my coworker,
we bump into each other.
00:08:37:27 - 00:08:41:29
So we said, let's
go to the hospital to donate blood.
00:08:43:08 - 00:08:46:17
And then when we went to
the hospital, the,
00:08:47:13 - 00:08:51:10
nurses turn us away
because there was no survivors.
00:08:52:09 - 00:08:55:29
And it was a tragic day
because over thousands of people,
00:08:56:04 - 00:08:59:04
innocent people had died.
00:08:59:11 - 00:09:03:17
And, and I was hurting
very much in my heart.
00:09:05:03 - 00:09:06:01
However, the
00:09:06:01 - 00:09:09:05
one difference from years ago
when I was younger
00:09:09:09 - 00:09:13:00
and now is because I already started
the qigong practice,
00:09:13:18 - 00:09:16:07
and I knew even during the whole chaotic
00:09:16:07 - 00:09:21:01
situation, I was able to stay calm in
trying to figure out what's the best way
00:09:21:01 - 00:09:24:01
making decisions to
to stay away from the danger,
00:09:24:17 - 00:09:30:05
and also with the uncertainty
and the lockdown in, Manhattan.
00:09:30:05 - 00:09:33:02
So we could not even like there's
no phone.
00:09:33:02 - 00:09:36:06
The phone was all like disrupted
and all that.
00:09:36:27 - 00:09:39:28
So every day
I just keep like practicing qigong,
00:09:40:10 - 00:09:43:10
which is a combination of breathing,
00:09:44:02 - 00:09:48:11
gentle movement and visualization
and meditation technique
00:09:48:11 - 00:09:52:04
that I do every day
because that helped me to be grounded.
00:09:52:24 - 00:09:55:24
And when emotions come, I know that I
00:09:56:02 - 00:09:58:21
this time
I'm not hiding all these emotions
00:09:58:21 - 00:10:03:06
of fear and anxiety,
but how to really process this
00:10:03:12 - 00:10:07:09
in a healthy way
so it doesn't get stuck inside me.
00:10:07:09 - 00:10:11:00
Because we know that whenever undigested emotions
stuck.
00:10:11:16 - 00:10:16:10
It comes out in our physical body because
the our body has five parts, right?
00:10:16:11 - 00:10:21:06
The physical, mental, emotional,
spiritual, and also the psychic aspect.
00:10:21:20 - 00:10:24:14
Any one of these aspects is impacted
00:10:24:14 - 00:10:27:14
is going to be coming through to our body.
00:10:27:20 - 00:10:30:20
So with the practice and I just knew like
00:10:31:06 - 00:10:36:22
I just feel so much calmer
and easier to digest all the emotions
00:10:37:06 - 00:10:41:10
and also I see that strength
00:10:42:06 - 00:10:45:21
coming out of that is because
the New Yorkers and all the friends
00:10:45:21 - 00:10:49:12
and people all around
the globe is coming together,
00:10:49:23 - 00:10:52:23
giving us a hand or prayers
00:10:52:23 - 00:10:56:08
and everything that they could do
so we can build back
00:10:56:12 - 00:11:01:11
whatever has been lost with resilience
and with the strength and with the love.
00:11:01:29 - 00:11:04:21
So from that point on, and my guiding
00:11:04:21 - 00:11:09:05
principle is to living my life with love
and not fear,
00:11:09:27 - 00:11:12:07
with hope and not despair,
00:11:12:07 - 00:11:15:07
and with understanding and not judgment.

I was just going to say the same thing.

Yes, I got shivers
when you were telling the whole story and

and just it sounded like you were
that person in the room who remained calm
00:11:29:14 - 00:11:32:27
from everything that you had been through
and all of your practices.

And that's what it takes.

It takes one person in the
room to help everybody else
00:11:38:21 - 00:11:40:21
settle a little bit and remain calm.
00:11:40:21 - 00:11:41:19
It's amazing.

You've been through a lot, and I
apparently you've been through even more.
00:11:45:08 - 00:11:51:06
I hear that there was an accident
that led you to the Reiki practice.
00:11:51:21 - 00:11:54:09
Can you tell us a little bit
about what happened?
00:11:54:09 - 00:11:58:14
What what was this event
that that led you to learning Reiki? Yes.
00:11:58:14 - 00:12:02:14
And, that is because,
right before like, few years,
00:12:02:14 - 00:12:06:23
I mean, about a year before the Covid,
I was just
00:12:07:03 - 00:12:10:21
scooting around with my daughter
and my husband around the neighborhood,
00:12:11:08 - 00:12:14:08
and there was this concrete,
00:12:14:10 - 00:12:16:27
that has a, a crack on it.
00:12:16:27 - 00:12:21:10
And I was flying so fast,
and the scooter hit the concrete,
00:12:21:29 - 00:12:24:25
and then I was flying out of the scooter
00:12:24:25 - 00:12:28:03
onto the concrete pavement
on the sidewalk.
00:12:28:09 - 00:12:30:25
So I said,
oh my God, I'm going to break my wrist.
00:12:30:25 - 00:12:32:00
Well, that was the thinking part.
00:12:32:00 - 00:12:33:26
I said, no, I'm not going to break it.
00:12:33:26 - 00:12:37:11
So instead of landing my wrists
onto the pavement,
00:12:37:20 - 00:12:41:17
I landed my chest
and my shoulder onto the concrete.
00:12:41:24 - 00:12:45:16
So after that
I was like on a frog position for a while.
00:12:46:08 - 00:12:47:16
Something's going to land.
00:12:47:16 - 00:12:51:01
Luckily, I was like I knew yoga,
but even that took a while.
00:12:51:12 - 00:12:55:20
So but after that I felt oh my gosh,
I got strained because luckily
00:12:55:20 - 00:12:59:26
I didn’t break my wrist,
but my neck and my shoulder was all strain
00:12:59:26 - 00:13:04:12
and so I couldn't even, like, turn my head
without feeling the pain
00:13:04:12 - 00:13:08:06
like it was just right all around so
I had to like whomever talked to me.
00:13:08:06 - 00:13:11:00
I was like a robot for a while.
00:13:11:00 - 00:13:14:00
And then just
right after that, during that weekend,
00:13:15:00 - 00:13:16:10
I got the phone call from
00:13:16:10 - 00:13:20:10
my one of my friends,
which is like, Chantal knows about her.
00:13:20:20 - 00:13:24:26
And she was I, I said like, oh,
I had this accident.
00:13:25:08 - 00:13:27:27
And she said,
I have a Reiki session coming up
00:13:27:27 - 00:13:29:12
if you want to come and check it out.
00:13:29:12 - 00:13:31:06
I said, can it reduce my pain?
00:13:31:06 - 00:13:33:27
And she said, yes.
So I said, okay, I'm coming.
00:13:33:27 - 00:13:34:06
Yeah.
00:13:34:06 - 00:13:39:00
So, and it was amazing
because, she's didn't even touch me.
00:13:39:00 - 00:13:42:18
So it was a group session and she,
but I and just,
00:13:42:18 - 00:13:47:01
she was just kind of standing behind me
and then I but I felt that heat
00:13:47:14 - 00:13:50:14
kind of coming behind me and all around.
00:13:50:22 - 00:13:53:22
And then after the session,
00:13:53:25 - 00:13:56:25
I was able to turn my head
without much pain.
00:13:57:01 - 00:13:59:10
So that's why I was so surprised.

I was like,
where was I about Reiki? Right?
00:14:02:04 - 00:14:03:18
So I was so inspired.
00:14:03:18 - 00:14:04:15
I tell her, like,
00:14:04:15 - 00:14:08:11
whenever you have the training
I am in, I want to learn this technique
00:14:08:18 - 00:14:11:21
because knowing yoga and qigong,
00:14:11:29 - 00:14:15:01
I know how powerful this Reiki too is.
00:14:15:13 - 00:14:20:12
through the years that I practice, qigong for 20 year and and yoga for 15.
00:14:20:24 - 00:14:23:07
And then I was just like,
wow, that's amazing.
00:14:23:07 - 00:14:24:20
So the rest is history.

I got certified in like train
and certified for level one, level two,
00:14:29:22 - 00:14:32:24
and then later on advanced into Reiki
master levels.

And I was just like,
this is something that
00:14:37:18 - 00:14:40:04

are just activating the universal life

However, today I wanted to focus on Reiki

because Reiki is easily learned

That is the difference.

But with Reiki we have some hand positions

level one student

and she just came into the class
very agitated.

And she was telling us that because, her

one of her clients just walked away

from a high value contract
without good reason,

and she was relying on that
to make things happen with other areas.

So she was very, very agitated.

And then I said,
okay, let's just kind of observe this.

Yeah. Talk it out.

after talking out of this and acknowledging

this is not an ideal situation
because I'm relying on that.

I was trusting this person,
but somehow it fell through.

I know that I got agitated
because of I care about that.

I care about the project. Right?

So after all this acknowledgment
and all that, so we started like, okay,

for the treatment of our entire being.

And she put her hand onto her heart center
for a few minutes.

And then afterwards she put her hands
onto her abdomen for a few minutes.

That was already.

She already got attunement
the weekend before.

this she's activating. So?

and then so they can feel it right away.

But I am just so happy that I,

so relieved from all these things
that I was worried about before.

to solve the problem at that point, right?

It's just, during the Covid, I had,

various things like coming around and all that.

But one of the situation I faced that
is that my daughter contracted Covid.

She's seven years old and contracted Covid

at the height of it in December 2020,

and obviously
we want to be isolating and quarantine her.

So I decided to teach the Reiki level
one course to my daughter

and to my husband
so we can boost our immune system

so we don't have to be afraid
of the of the Covid 19.

And then because of that,
like they got very like

vitalize and I felt like,
oh my gosh, this is the time

that I should share this with others
because it is so important
