Hello everyone

00:00:43:04 - 00:00:46:24
and welcome to the ANEW Body Insight podcast.

00:00:46:24 - 00:00:52:06
I am Chantal Donnelly and we have a very special episode for you today.

00:00:52:06 - 00:00:54:22
We're mixing things up a little bit.

00:00:54:22 - 00:00:57:22
I am actually interviewing my co-host,

00:00:58:04 - 00:01:02:08
the Amazing Dr. Supatra Tovar, today.

00:01:02:09 - 00:01:04:07
Very exciting actually.

00:01:04:07 - 00:01:08:07
I think she's called it grilling her, so I don't know, maybe we can roast her.

00:01:08:07 - 00:01:10:16
We'll see. We'll see how things unfold. Okay.

00:01:12:15 - 00:01:13:15
I'm ready.

00:01:13:15 - 00:01:15:18
All right. I'm sure you are. All right.

00:01:15:18 - 00:01:18:24
First thing we got to do is read Supatra’s bio,

00:01:18:24 - 00:01:21:16
because you all want to know more about her.

00:01:21:16 - 00:01:23:11
I know you've been hearing her interview

00:01:23:11 - 00:01:25:15
lots of fun people, but you probably want to know

00:01:25:15 - 00:01:28:20
even more about what she does, what she is all about.

00:01:28:20 - 00:01:31:20
So let's get into it. Here we go.

00:01:32:13 - 00:01:36:21
As one of the only licensed clinical psychologist

00:01:36:21 - 00:01:39:21
who is also a registered dietitian

00:01:39:23 - 00:01:44:18
and certified fitness expert, Dr. Tovar teaches clients

00:01:44:18 - 00:01:49:04
how to use research based techniques in behavioral psychology,

00:01:49:13 - 00:01:53:04
nutritional science, and exercise kinesiology

00:01:53:17 - 00:01:56:17
to overcome complex challenges.

00:01:56:23 - 00:02:02:11
She harnesses the different disciplines of her unique background to show her

00:02:02:11 - 00:02:05:15
clients how small modifications to daily

00:02:05:15 - 00:02:09:17
habits can transform mindsets, enhance

00:02:09:17 - 00:02:14:07
personal relationships, and accelerate professional trajectories.

00:02:14:07 - 00:02:19:01
Dr. Tovar has helped clients navigate through trauma,

00:02:19:18 - 00:02:22:14
eating disorders, depression,

00:02:22:14 - 00:02:26:13
anxiety, and grief all important things.

00:02:27:09 - 00:02:32:15
Dr. Tovar founded ANEW, which, in case you're all wondering what that stands

00:02:32:15 - 00:02:36:09
for, it stands for Advanced Nutrition

00:02:36:09 - 00:02:42:06
and Emotional Wellness, (ANEW) to offer simple routines

00:02:42:06 - 00:02:45:22
to improve your mindset, your health, and your spirit.

00:02:46:16 - 00:02:51:11
The flagship online video course Deprogram Diet Culture.

00:02:51:11 - 00:02:53:01
I've been through this course, people.

00:02:53:01 - 00:02:54:16
It's good.

00:02:54:16 - 00:02:58:02
This course guides participants through the successful

00:02:58:02 - 00:03:02:08
seven step method Dr. Tovar has employed to help clients

00:03:02:08 - 00:03:07:05
break free from the destructive cycles of dieting and weight gain.

00:03:08:04 - 00:03:11:08
A condensed version of the course

00:03:11:18 - 00:03:14:12
is available as a book.

00:03:14:12 - 00:03:17:09
Okay, now this is very exciting because this book

00:03:17:09 - 00:03:20:09
that Supatra wrote is coming out in September.

00:03:20:09 - 00:03:23:09
Y'all, it is coming out. Yay,

00:03:23:14 - 00:03:26:24
The book is called Deprogram Diet Culture:

00:03:27:11 - 00:03:29:09
Ready for the subtitle?

00:03:29:09 - 00:03:31:12
I got to take a deep breath.

00:03:31:12 - 00:03:32:08
I'm going to start again.

00:03:32:08 - 00:03:34:14
I think this I think this book needs it's like da da.

00:03:34:14 - 00:03:35:16
Da da da da da da. Da da.

00:03:35:16 - 00:03:39:18
Here's the title of the book Deprogram Diet Culture:

00:03:40:05 - 00:03:43:05
Rethink your Relationship with Food,

00:03:43:08 - 00:03:47:05
Heal Your Mind, and Live a Diet-Free Life.

00:03:47:19 - 00:03:49:04
Coming out in September.

00:03:49:04 - 00:03:51:04
Gonna be published very soon.

00:03:51:04 - 00:03:54:24
I'm so excited for you about this book, so thank you so much.

00:03:54:24 - 00:03:56:01
Thank you.

00:03:56:01 - 00:03:59:10
It's been a journey and I'm very excited for it to come out.

00:03:59:17 - 00:04:02:13
I am too, I think the world needs it.

00:04:02:13 - 00:04:05:10
So thank you for being here to answer all of my

00:04:07:01 - 00:04:09:22
grueling questions. Yes.

00:04:09:22 - 00:04:16:07
Let's start with maybe how can you define Diet Culture for our listeners?

00:04:16:07 - 00:04:16:17
First?

00:04:16:17 - 00:04:17:09
And then can

00:04:17:09 - 00:04:22:06
you talk about the negative impact that Diet Culture has on our health?

00:04:22:17 - 00:04:25:14
And what are some signs that maybe somebody

00:04:25:14 - 00:04:28:14
is impacted by Diet Culture, that they're struggling with it?

00:04:29:09 - 00:04:31:18
Well, I think what's really interesting about diet

00:04:31:18 - 00:04:36:16
culture is how it has morphed and shifted over the years.

00:04:37:14 - 00:04:42:03
we can pretty much pinpoint the beginning of Diet Culture to be around

00:04:42:03 - 00:04:46:06
like the 40s and 50s, but it really goes back further than that.

00:04:46:11 - 00:04:50:15
If you go way, way, way, way back in history, actually being plump,

00:04:51:12 - 00:04:53:21
having extra weight was something

00:04:53:21 - 00:04:56:21
that was desired because it proved that you had wealth.

00:04:57:03 - 00:04:59:11
It proved that you had access to health care.

00:04:59:11 - 00:05:01:08
It proved that you had access to food.

00:05:01:08 - 00:05:06:06
So it's always been about, a society's kind of structure

00:05:06:09 - 00:05:09:22
in terms of culture, who's kind of on top.

00:05:10:21 - 00:05:11:10
and then it

00:05:11:10 - 00:05:14:15
wasn't until, you know, the kind of the industrial revolution

00:05:14:15 - 00:05:17:19
when poorer people started to have access

00:05:18:02 - 00:05:21:00
to, you know, better nutrition,

00:05:21:00 - 00:05:25:21
and started to actually gain weight, that the higher classes wanted to find

00:05:25:21 - 00:05:30:12
a way to kind of distinguish themselves apart from the lower classes.

00:05:30:12 - 00:05:34:22
And that's when kind of the hourglass figure in the Victorian age, with corsets

00:05:34:22 - 00:05:38:22
and all of that stuff, really started to become more,

00:05:39:24 - 00:05:42:24
you know, desired,

00:05:43:16 - 00:05:45:01
sought after.

00:05:45:01 - 00:05:49:05
But really, when, you know, we hit kind of the 40s and 50s,

00:05:49:12 - 00:05:50:22
that's when it really took off.

00:05:50:22 - 00:05:54:00
So it's really about the pursuit

00:05:54:03 - 00:05:57:03
of a, an idolized,

00:05:57:08 - 00:06:00:17
idealized and idolized thin ideal,

00:06:00:23 - 00:06:03:18
along with having,

00:06:03:18 - 00:06:07:22
you know, kind of another pervasive bias take hold, which is bias against

00:06:07:22 - 00:06:12:15
people who have weight, you know, or considered overweight or considered obese.

00:06:13:10 - 00:06:16:14
so it's really about trying to pursue that route

00:06:16:22 - 00:06:21:21
and eschew the, you know, more overweight or obese route.

00:06:22:01 - 00:06:27:06
So you can see this in society, in every thing that we do,

00:06:27:07 - 00:06:29:22
you can look at, media and you can look at,

00:06:29:22 - 00:06:32:06
you know, people who are considered overweight

00:06:32:06 - 00:06:36:11
and their portrayals on in television and commercials and things like that.

00:06:36:11 - 00:06:37:13
They're always kind of,

00:06:37:13 - 00:06:42:12
you know, may be made the butt of a joke or derided or commented upon,

00:06:42:20 - 00:06:48:07
while the thinner, more attractive person you know gets the man at the end.

00:06:48:07 - 00:06:51:24
Or, you know, you can see it all throughout advertising.

00:06:51:24 - 00:06:55:05
So it's really in many ways,

00:06:56:22 - 00:07:01:05
a media and capitalism driven culture

00:07:01:14 - 00:07:06:08
where we just are kind of constantly made to feel like we're not good enough.

00:07:06:16 - 00:07:12:01
And if we do X, Y, and Z, maybe we can join this elite class.

00:07:12:10 - 00:07:15:14
So that's kind of the history of Diet Culture.

00:07:15:14 - 00:07:18:14
And honestly, I forgot the second half of your question.

00:07:19:12 - 00:07:20:06
I tell you what.

00:07:20:06 - 00:07:20:16
Let me see.

00:07:20:16 - 00:07:21:16
What was the second half.

00:07:21:16 - 00:07:24:04
Oh, how do you help someone?

00:07:24:04 - 00:07:24:20
well I'm sorry.

00:07:24:20 - 00:07:26:16
No, no, no. It was what are the signs?

00:07:26:16 - 00:07:27:05
What are the signs?

00:07:27:05 - 00:07:28:17
Okay. That someone has Diet Culture?

00:07:28:17 - 00:07:30:06
Well, I think we all do.

00:07:30:06 - 00:07:33:14
I really do think it's it's completely pervasive.

00:07:33:14 - 00:07:36:09
I do, I know I do. Yeah, we all do.

00:07:36:09 - 00:07:38:09
I mean, we really,

00:07:38:09 - 00:07:39:01
you know,

00:07:39:01 - 00:07:40:17
but somebody who is very much

00:07:40:17 - 00:07:44:14
entrenched in it, you would see somebody who might be dieting

00:07:44:14 - 00:07:48:03
all the time, who is very concerned about their appearance.

00:07:48:03 - 00:07:52:17
And so they're going to get, you know, Botox treatments or plastic surgery.

00:07:52:17 - 00:07:53:13
You might see,

00:07:54:16 - 00:07:55:05
you know, somebody

00:07:55:05 - 00:07:58:14
going to extreme measures in terms of exercise,

00:07:59:06 - 00:08:02:05
anyone who's really focused on

00:08:02:05 - 00:08:07:15
trying to achieve this ideal, oftentimes to their own detriment

00:08:07:15 - 00:08:11:14
or to their own distress, impairment of functioning.

00:08:11:14 - 00:08:16:18
So I see a lot of people in my practice who, you know, especially young women,

00:08:17:04 - 00:08:20:13
who have been very much influenced from an early age,

00:08:20:13 - 00:08:23:13
especially through social media,

00:08:23:16 - 00:08:26:13
to pursue this thin ideal.

00:08:26:13 - 00:08:30:12
And I often see the, the outcome of that,

00:08:30:12 - 00:08:33:21
and that's usually through disordered eating patterns and eating disorders.

00:08:33:21 - 00:08:36:21
So that's one of the main ways that you can,

00:08:36:21 - 00:08:39:24
spot somebody who, who might be suffering from this,

00:08:40:09 - 00:08:45:09
but really it's, it can come down to looking at someone who might purchase

00:08:46:05 - 00:08:51:03
numerous things in order to try to achieve this ideal,

00:08:51:03 - 00:08:54:08
whether it's supplements, you know, diet

00:08:54:08 - 00:08:57:08
foods, certain types of clothing.

00:08:57:14 - 00:09:02:15
It's it's a very negatively driven desire.

00:09:02:15 - 00:09:08:04
And usually it comes from not necessarily just wanting to fit the the thin ideal,

00:09:08:12 - 00:09:12:20
but trying to avoid being classified in the overweight

00:09:12:20 - 00:09:16:23
or obese category because of the way that people are treated,

00:09:17:22 - 00:09:18:21
in the country and in the

00:09:18:21 - 00:09:22:13
world who are overweight or who have obesity.

00:09:23:10 - 00:09:28:00
Yeah, that connection with the history of capitalism

00:09:28:08 - 00:09:32:01
and how it all ties into this Diet Culture thing is really interesting,

00:09:32:01 - 00:09:35:10
and how your economic status

00:09:35:18 - 00:09:38:23
is so important to everybody.

00:09:38:23 - 00:09:43:10
And I imagine one of the signs might be just just the spending of money

00:09:43:10 - 00:09:46:10
to look rich. Yes.

00:09:46:20 - 00:09:47:22
Yeah, exactly.

00:09:47:22 - 00:09:51:00
Like just all of that added in to needing to be thin.

00:09:51:00 - 00:09:55:14
And like you said, spending money on the the diet foods and the supplements

00:09:55:14 - 00:09:58:16
and whatever the guru is telling you you need to purchase.

00:09:58:16 - 00:10:01:16
Right? Right, right. Exactly.

00:10:01:20 - 00:10:06:19
And, all right, we know that diets fail.

00:10:07:06 - 00:10:10:22
I mean, I guess I don't know if the whole world knows that, but, hey, diets fail.

00:10:11:04 - 00:10:13:01
Diets fail, diets fail.

00:10:13:01 - 00:10:16:23
Can you explain to us why diets fail and then what

00:10:16:23 - 00:10:20:10
you might offer somebody as an alternative to it?

00:10:20:11 - 00:10:23:07
Absolutely. Yes. Absolutely.

00:10:23:07 - 00:10:28:00
Physiologically, the body does not like to be in any kind of restriction.

00:10:28:00 - 00:10:31:00
And this goes back to our evolutionary history.

00:10:31:06 - 00:10:34:18
We had gone through many periods of deprivation,

00:10:35:12 - 00:10:38:19
to having, you know, access to food, to deprivation.

00:10:38:19 - 00:10:43:09
So when we're in a deprivation type of, physiological state,

00:10:43:15 - 00:10:46:22
the body is actually really trying to hold on to

00:10:46:22 - 00:10:50:15
whatever it is that we have when a diet is started.

00:10:50:20 - 00:10:53:24
And usually if you just look at the nature of diets, they're always,

00:10:54:00 - 00:10:55:20
you know, trying to cut something out.

00:10:55:20 - 00:10:57:21
There's always something that you're cutting out.

00:10:57:21 - 00:11:00:21
Whether it's right now it's all about cutting carbs,

00:11:00:21 - 00:11:03:21
which makes me sad because we all love carbs.

00:11:04:11 - 00:11:09:06
but it's it's gone the gamut in terms of, you know, the different types of diets.

00:11:09:06 - 00:11:14:12
Or you can only have grapefruit, or you could only have cabbage soup.

00:11:14:12 - 00:11:18:20
And this was designed so that you lose weight quickly while you actually you do

00:11:19:02 - 00:11:20:11
when you're in deprivation.

00:11:20:11 - 00:11:24:07
But the body, you know, to to quote the book, the body is keeping the score.

00:11:24:07 - 00:11:28:09
The body's like, oh no, no, no, no, no, no, you've lost this much water.

00:11:28:09 - 00:11:32:19
You've lost this much, this much lean muscle, you've lost this much fat.

00:11:32:19 - 00:11:35:04
And this is actually recording it.

00:11:35:04 - 00:11:38:06
And and trying to return

00:11:38:06 - 00:11:41:06
you back to that same proportion

00:11:41:10 - 00:11:44:09
or more when the diet started.

00:11:44:09 - 00:11:46:05
So there's a whole bunch of processes

00:11:46:05 - 00:11:50:00
and I won't go into the nitty gritty of them that your body goes through

00:11:50:05 - 00:11:53:11
when you're in a deprivation kind of a state.

00:11:54:04 - 00:11:57:04
but really it's when the diet is done

00:11:57:11 - 00:12:01:14
that is when the body kicks in and it goes through a process called

00:12:01:14 - 00:12:05:15
compensatory hyperphagia, which, you know, if we were to break it down,

00:12:05:15 - 00:12:11:13
compensatory means to make up for hyper means lots and phagia means eat.

00:12:11:13 - 00:12:14:12
So essentially you just eat a lot.

00:12:14:12 - 00:12:19:02
You eat a lot after you've had a diet. It makes sense. Yes.

00:12:19:02 - 00:12:21:00
And then the body. Doesn't feel safe.

00:12:21:00 - 00:12:22:13
It's going to try and make up for that.

00:12:22:13 - 00:12:24:03
Yeah, exactly.

00:12:24:03 - 00:12:28:05
So going through and I, I've seen people who've gone through cycle

00:12:28:05 - 00:12:32:07
after cycle of diet and weight gain only

00:12:32:07 - 00:12:35:24
to come back to where they started, if not more.

00:12:36:09 - 00:12:38:14
And so I really try to educate people

00:12:38:14 - 00:12:42:04
that dieting to lose weight is never the answer.

00:12:42:13 - 00:12:45:21
And also, what you're doing when you're dieting is you're essentially

00:12:45:21 - 00:12:50:01
ignoring your body's signals, and the body does not like that.

00:12:50:08 - 00:12:55:23
Our hunger hormone, and our fullness hormone, namely, ghrelin.

00:12:55:23 - 00:12:59:11
And leptin, there's a whole bunch of other hormones that are involved in that,

00:13:00:01 - 00:13:03:13
Ghrelin, like the grr in the name is telling you when you're hungry

00:13:04:00 - 00:13:08:06
and when you deprive yourself, ghrelin levels shoot up

00:13:08:06 - 00:13:12:03
because it's like, hey, hey, I am hungry.

00:13:12:03 - 00:13:14:24
And it's trying to tell you, please, please, please feed me.

00:13:14:24 - 00:13:17:10
And then, you know, your leptin levels.

00:13:17:10 - 00:13:20:22
You know you're never going to actually feel like you're full.

00:13:21:06 - 00:13:23:07
So they become out of balance.

00:13:23:07 - 00:13:27:10
And the way to actually get yourself out of this cycle,

00:13:27:10 - 00:13:30:05
along with a whole bunch of other things that I go into in the book,

00:13:30:05 - 00:13:34:17
but just physiologically, is to actually listen to your body.

00:13:34:17 - 00:13:38:10
It's actually to honor when you are feeling hungry

00:13:38:16 - 00:13:40:24
and when you are feeling full.

00:13:40:24 - 00:13:42:08
But a lot of people have

00:13:42:08 - 00:13:46:16
a lot of difficulties in this area because they have been conditioned

00:13:46:16 - 00:13:50:07
to think that food in general is shameful, which makes me sad.

00:13:50:16 - 00:13:54:02
Along with cutting carbs like food is like life to me and I.

00:13:54:13 - 00:13:56:19
So I think one of the most important things

00:13:56:19 - 00:14:00:23
that we can focus on in our daily lives, they're conditioned

00:14:00:23 - 00:14:06:08
not to want to eat food and so they ignore their hunger signals.

00:14:07:00 - 00:14:10:10
oftentimes too, if it's on the other end of the spectrum,

00:14:10:17 - 00:14:15:12
they're eating out of, you know, need for comfort, stress relief,

00:14:16:11 - 00:14:16:23
out of a

00:14:16:23 - 00:14:19:23
lot of, you know, ingrained and older,

00:14:19:24 - 00:14:23:07
difficulties in their attachments and trauma in their background.

00:14:23:16 - 00:14:27:16
So it's a combination of learning how to tune into your body and addressing

00:14:27:20 - 00:14:33:24
those issues, in a non nutritional kind of way, which can be through therapy,

00:14:34:07 - 00:14:37:24
which can be through meditation, through mindfulness.

00:14:38:07 - 00:14:41:22
There's a whole bunch of ways where you can learn how to tune into your body,

00:14:42:17 - 00:14:46:17
and that can be the start of your journey away from Diet Culture,

00:14:47:16 - 00:14:50:02
I hope.

00:14:50:02 - 00:14:51:24
And all makes perfect sense

00:14:51:24 - 00:14:55:17
that need for the body to recoup that weight

00:14:55:17 - 00:14:58:22
because it's not safe to lose weight like that,

00:14:58:22 - 00:15:01:22
that just makes perfect sense. Yes.

00:15:01:24 - 00:15:07:20
and it makes sense that listening to the body with curiosity.

00:15:07:23 - 00:15:09:21
Right. yes.

00:15:09:21 - 00:15:15:09
And just really sort of paying attention and that maybe those hunger signals

00:15:15:09 - 00:15:19:20
won't be so intense for people if they start to listen to the body

00:15:19:20 - 00:15:21:05
and not make the body feel like it's

00:15:21:05 - 00:15:25:08
really got to scream and shout to get you to eat properly.

00:15:25:20 - 00:15:26:02
Yeah.

00:15:26:02 - 00:15:30:03
There's a whole, I think, process that my clients go through

00:15:30:18 - 00:15:35:01
when they actually give themselves permission to eat.

00:15:35:01 - 00:15:37:16
I think it starts off with guilt and shame,

00:15:37:16 - 00:15:41:14
and then when they really start to do this on a regular basis,

00:15:42:03 - 00:15:44:23
they see that actually when they do listen to their hunger

00:15:44:23 - 00:15:49:02
and when they provide themselves whatever it is that their body is telling

00:15:49:02 - 00:15:50:01
them to eat,

00:15:51:02 - 00:15:52:02
you know, and, and

00:15:52:02 - 00:15:56:00
usually what I'll see them being more successful

00:15:56:00 - 00:15:59:12
in is if they're kind of staying within the whole foods kind of realm,

00:15:59:24 - 00:16:03:24
then they start to see, oh, well, it's not just that I'm listening to my hunger.

00:16:03:24 - 00:16:07:13
I'm listening to what this food is doing inside my body.

00:16:07:17 - 00:16:10:02
Oh, I have some energy.

00:16:10:02 - 00:16:11:22
Oh, I feel better.

00:16:11:22 - 00:16:15:08
My mental health is improving and that motivates them.

00:16:15:08 - 00:16:20:06
I love it that it is an internally driven process

00:16:20:06 - 00:16:24:15
as opposed to an external process, which is what Diet Culture is.

00:16:24:22 - 00:16:29:07
And so that's how I help people move away from that influence

00:16:29:07 - 00:16:32:07
so that they can listen to themselves

00:16:32:16 - 00:16:37:12
finally, and trust themselves and,  and listen to that.

00:16:37:16 - 00:16:39:00
So good.

00:16:39:00 - 00:16:40:17
I love that. Me too.

00:16:40:17 - 00:16:44:01
Love that. More internal, less external.

00:16:44:07 - 00:16:47:11
Yes, please. Guidance. Yes. Yes.

00:16:47:15 - 00:16:48:17
So okay.

00:16:48:17 - 00:16:54:17
So listening to your hunger cues and your satiation cues are going to be

00:16:54:17 - 00:17:00:06
one way that I imagine someone can sort of deprogram themselves from Diet Culture.

00:17:00:06 - 00:17:04:22
What are other ways that people can help themselves to get out of that?

00:17:05:09 - 00:17:08:09
Yes, I have a bunch of tips.

00:17:08:11 - 00:17:11:01
I really do think that advertising

00:17:11:01 - 00:17:14:12
is a kind of, insidious.

00:17:16:11 - 00:17:17:02
well, it is

00:17:17:02 - 00:17:20:22
just it's what fuels our capitalism, so I gotta give it to them.

00:17:20:22 - 00:17:23:22
But really, when you look at the basics of,

00:17:24:08 - 00:17:27:13
the type of manipulation that happens in advertising,

00:17:27:23 - 00:17:32:01
it is essentially designed to make you feel like you have something

00:17:32:02 - 00:17:35:16
you don't have something that you need, that this, you know, company,

00:17:35:16 - 00:17:40:03
this product can provide you and it can be very manipulative.

00:17:40:08 - 00:17:43:09
You can see the effects that it has on children,

00:17:43:11 - 00:17:47:10
especially as they are very, very into marketing to children

00:17:47:11 - 00:17:52:00
so that they have an influence in terms of what the parent buys at the store.

00:17:52:00 - 00:17:55:21
And if you look at really what is being influenced, it's usually

00:17:56:04 - 00:17:59:04
you know, some ultra processed, you know, junk usually,

00:18:00:18 - 00:18:03:04
foods that are not necessarily nutritious.

00:18:03:04 - 00:18:05:08
But if you look at advertising in general,

00:18:06:14 - 00:18:07:05
that is

00:18:07:05 - 00:18:10:08
what is kind of pushing us to make all of these purchases.

00:18:10:08 - 00:18:13:18
I recommend people to stop subscribing

00:18:14:01 - 00:18:17:12
to certain, like fashion magazines,

00:18:18:07 - 00:18:21:21
you know, diet and health magazines, especially.

00:18:22:20 - 00:18:27:05
I encourage people to hide, advertisements that they might find

00:18:27:05 - 00:18:32:24
in their social media, try to, you know, remove all of these influences, though.

00:18:32:24 - 00:18:35:09
It's very, very difficult.

00:18:35:09 - 00:18:38:08
and, you know, now that we're into streaming services

00:18:38:08 - 00:18:41:10
and things like that, it's much easier not to see commercials.

00:18:41:16 - 00:18:45:16
But, you know, really trying to move past them as quickly as possible.

00:18:46:04 - 00:18:50:19
I also think social media is one of the biggest drivers of Diet Culture.

00:18:50:19 - 00:18:54:15
So I don't say get off social media, I'm on social media,

00:18:54:15 - 00:19:00:01
you're on social media, but curating your feed can be really important.

00:19:00:01 - 00:19:03:02
And the algorithm then just starts to bring you more

00:19:03:02 - 00:19:06:02
and more of what you are, you know, attracted to.

00:19:06:03 - 00:19:10:06
So if you're watching, you know what I, what I eat in a day

00:19:10:06 - 00:19:12:03
or you know, my before and after photos, you're

00:19:12:03 - 00:19:15:04
just going to get more and more of that and that's going to affect you

00:19:15:04 - 00:19:16:14
in a negative way.

00:19:16:14 - 00:19:20:06
So I like to follow people that are inspirational

00:19:20:06 - 00:19:24:08
celebrities that you know, are outspoken against Diet Culture.

00:19:24:08 - 00:19:28:13
I like to follow influencers who like to, you know, break the mold.

00:19:28:23 - 00:19:32:04
I also love puppies and kittens and all sorts of animals.

00:19:32:12 - 00:19:36:01
So when you look at my my feed, it's really inspirational.

00:19:36:01 - 00:19:39:03
And I think, you know, I've helped a lot of teenagers

00:19:39:23 - 00:19:44:20
re-curate their feed to see a very, very good result.

00:19:44:20 - 00:19:46:22
So I think we have that control.

00:19:46:22 - 00:19:50:22
A lot of people think we don't, and a lot of people consume social media

00:19:50:22 - 00:19:54:05
just kind of, you know, blindly without even really thinking about it.

00:19:54:05 - 00:19:56:22
But when you do, you're intentional about it.

00:19:56:22 - 00:19:58:09
It's really important.

00:19:58:09 - 00:20:00:00
So that's one another way.

00:20:00:00 - 00:20:03:00
And I also think we have to be really mindful,

00:20:03:00 - 00:20:07:01
especially as we are trying to heal ourselves from Diet Culture,

00:20:07:09 - 00:20:11:17
the connections that we have with others, really discerning

00:20:11:17 - 00:20:16:01
if they are positive connections or if they're really like negative influences,

00:20:16:01 - 00:20:19:08
like people who are telling us, you know, you got to diet with me

00:20:19:08 - 00:20:22:23
or you have to come and exercise, you know, excessively with me.

00:20:23:08 - 00:20:26:01
I'm not saying end any kind of relationships.

00:20:26:01 - 00:20:30:12
I'm saying maybe create some boundaries where you can decide

00:20:30:21 - 00:20:35:08
when it's healthy for you to be around that kind of influence and when it's not.

00:20:35:17 - 00:20:39:09
And and really being particular about who you're spending time

00:20:39:09 - 00:20:41:06
with as your healing.

00:20:41:06 - 00:20:45:16
I find it really, really important for me just personally to surround myself,

00:20:45:16 - 00:20:51:14
like with, you know, amazing, smart, beautiful from the inside out

00:20:51:14 - 00:20:56:01
people who really don't, spend a lot of time in that area.

00:20:56:09 - 00:21:00:04
And so I think just really kind of looking around at the relationships

00:21:00:04 - 00:21:04:17
you have around you and deciding who to spend more time

00:21:04:17 - 00:21:08:01
and who to spend a little less time with can really help you as well.

00:21:08:04 - 00:21:10:11
I I'm so excited for this book.

00:21:10:11 - 00:21:12:17
I think it's going to really help a lot of people.

00:21:15:00 - 00:21:16:16
yeah, I have to be honest,

00:21:16:16 - 00:21:20:20
you know, having you as the interviewee

00:21:20:20 - 00:21:24:00
and no longer my co-host, you're usually they want to keeps time.

00:21:24:00 - 00:21:26:14
So I have no idea for of time.

00:21:26:14 - 00:21:29:01
We're almost out of time.

00:21:29:01 - 00:21:30:15
Excellent.

00:21:30:15 - 00:21:35:17
And that would be the appropriate time for me to say to you, Dr. Supatra

00:21:36:06 - 00:21:38:16
Tovar, can you tell people

00:21:38:16 - 00:21:42:23
how they can get in touch with you, how they can learn more from you?

00:21:42:23 - 00:21:45:21
Are you on Instagram? Do you have a website? You have workshops.

00:21:45:21 - 00:21:49:11
What's going on besides this amazing book that's coming out in September?

00:21:49:23 - 00:21:54:02
Well, I do have the online course, which is called the program Diet Culture.

00:21:54:02 - 00:21:58:06
It's the extended version of what you know, I talk about in the book

00:21:58:06 - 00:22:01:11
that is out right now, and you can access

00:22:01:11 - 00:22:04:11
that on anew-insight.com.

00:22:04:23 - 00:22:07:12
The book is coming out in September.

00:22:07:12 - 00:22:11:07
You can find it already on Amazon and preorder it.

00:22:11:11 - 00:22:14:17
I invite you to do that. Oh my goodness.

00:22:14:17 - 00:22:18:21
I know it launches in September, so I'm very excited about that.

00:22:19:07 - 00:22:23:22
I have a lot of, you know, podcasts and other appearances coming up,

00:22:24:15 - 00:22:28:24
which I will, you know, let people know about on my social media.

00:22:28:24 - 00:22:34:00
I have two different handles I have @drsupatratovar

00:22:34:01 - 00:22:37:00
@drsupatratovar on,

00:22:38:01 - 00:22:39:08
Instagram, Facebook,

00:22:39:08 - 00:22:43:10
TikTok, Threads on, LinkedIn as well.

00:22:43:10 - 00:22:48:06
And I also have @my.anew.insight

00:22:48:06 - 00:22:53:18
that is on all of those same, social media platforms as well.

00:22:53:18 - 00:22:56:13
So there's tons of ways to get ahold of me.

00:22:56:13 - 00:23:02:01
I also have anew-insight.com, and I have drsupatratovar.com.

00:23:02:01 - 00:23:06:18
So, you know, send me an email, DM me, I'm available.

00:23:06:18 - 00:23:08:01
And I like to talk to people.

00:23:08:01 - 00:23:10:16
So I welcome you.

00:23:10:16 - 00:23:13:18
Yay. And everybody go preorder her book.

00:23:14:07 - 00:23:17:19
Yes. Coming out before when is it coming out September.

00:23:17:19 - 00:23:20:15
Do you have a specific date? I think it's September 9th.

00:23:20:15 - 00:23:23:07
September 9th. All right. Yes.

00:23:23:07 - 00:23:26:11
well, this is we don't know when this is going to be released, but

00:23:26:11 - 00:23:33:09
if either go buy it or preorder her book, I think it's an amazing tool for anybody.

00:23:33:12 - 00:23:36:06
We all have a messed up relationship with food.

00:23:36:06 - 00:23:39:16
I don't know anyone who doesn't have a messed up relationship with food.

00:23:39:21 - 00:23:44:04
Diet Culture is pervasive and I think that deprogramming Diet

00:23:44:04 - 00:23:45:23
Culture is super important.

00:23:45:23 - 00:23:50:12
But thank you so much for this amazing interview, and I hope

00:23:50:12 - 00:23:56:15
that your interview and my interview helps our listeners get to know us better

00:23:56:15 - 00:24:00:11
and kind of are able to relate with us and know our history

00:24:00:21 - 00:24:03:21
and know that we're doing this podcast

00:24:04:04 - 00:24:07:02
to help in all aspects of health.

00:24:07:02 - 00:24:10:08
I think that's what's so the wonderful combination of you and I is that,

00:24:10:17 - 00:24:13:21
you know, you have the physical therapy,

00:24:13:21 - 00:24:16:21
the stress, you know, insights.

00:24:17:04 - 00:24:20:06
I have nutrition and psychology insights.

00:24:20:10 - 00:24:23:07
We both have a history in fitness.

00:24:23:07 - 00:24:26:16
And so I think it's such a great combination to be able to help

00:24:26:16 - 00:24:30:02
people find their own path to their wellness journey.

00:24:30:12 - 00:24:34:02
Yeah, for sure that that pretty much encompasses all of it.

00:24:34:02 - 00:24:35:10
What we bring to the table.

00:24:35:10 - 00:24:37:01
And then we're both basket cases.

00:24:37:01 - 00:24:39:06
So you know we relate that way.

00:24:39:06 - 00:24:41:09
Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

00:24:41:09 - 00:24:43:01
This is why we've been friends for

00:24:44:13 - 00:24:47:14
23 years.

00:24:47:14 - 00:24:49:02
Is that? 23 years.

00:24:49:02 - 00:24:50:09
All righty.

00:24:50:09 - 00:24:53:09
23 years and counting.

00:24:53:10 - 00:24:54:08
All right.

00:24:54:08 - 00:24:58:07
And on that note, thank you all so much for joining us.
