Welcome
back to the ANEW Body Insight podcast.

00:00:44:01 - 00:00:47:08
We are here
for the second half of our interview

00:00:47:08 - 00:00:51:17
with coach and author and speaker
Deanna Moffitt.

00:00:52:00 - 00:00:53:21
Very excited to have you here.

00:00:53:21 - 00:00:55:14
Our first half of the episode,

00:00:55:14 - 00:00:56:12
if you haven't heard,

00:00:56:12 - 00:00:57:13

go back and listen.

00:00:57:20 - 00:01:03:05
It's really interesting to hear how Deanna
became a coach and became an author.

00:01:03:05 - 00:01:04:22
Some fun stuff there.

00:01:04:22 - 00:01:07:01
And let's get in more into the book.

00:01:07:01 - 00:01:10:01
I really want to talk about The Rewrite,
your book,

00:01:10:16 - 00:01:13:21
this episode
and really kind of gives our listeners

00:01:13:21 - 00:01:17:15
an idea of what that book’s about,
because I've read it and it's wonderful.

00:01:17:18 - 00:01:19:13
So glad to have you back.

00:01:19:13 - 00:01:20:13
Thanks Chantal.

00:01:20:13 - 00:01:21:08
Pleasure to be here.

00:01:21:08 - 00:01:23:13
Both, Chantal and Supatra,
thank you so much.

00:01:24:02 - 00:01:26:18
Thank you. So let's get into it.

00:01:26:18 - 00:01:31:01
I know that your book is about the stories
we tell ourselves

00:01:31:10 - 00:01:34:10
and how they can tend to keep us stuck,

00:01:34:21 - 00:01:37:18
not moving forward in our lives.

00:01:37:18 - 00:01:42:04
You have said that there are three
kinds of stories we tell ourselves.

00:01:42:05 - 00:01:44:10
What are those three stories?

00:01:44:10 - 00:01:49:03
Yeah, we usually tell ourselves
some great historical fiction.

00:01:50:02 - 00:01:54:01
Some current day, present reality.

00:01:54:15 - 00:01:57:13
Fictional reality.
And usually catastrophizing,

00:01:57:13 - 00:02:00:13
or a future dystopian, future stories.

00:02:02:01 - 00:02:06:05
what I recognize is that, you know, all,
all those different places

00:02:06:05 - 00:02:10:14
we are telling ourselves stories
about our past that aren't serving us.

00:02:10:21 - 00:02:13:02
We're telling stories
about our present moment.

00:02:13:02 - 00:02:15:24
The thing that just happened
that isn't serving us.

00:02:15:24 - 00:02:17:20
And we're certainly telling ourselves

00:02:17:20 - 00:02:20:20
stories about what
we think the future is going to be,

00:02:21:15 - 00:02:23:06
that we couldn't possibly know and

00:02:23:06 - 00:02:25:01
definitely are not serving us.

00:02:25:10 - 00:02:26:15
Mm-hmm.

00:02:27:01 - 00:02:29:04
We'll go into that a little bit more.

00:02:29:04 - 00:02:31:11
I relate to that with my clients.

00:02:31:11 - 00:02:35:11
I feel like my clients are either
stuck in the past or the future or both.

00:02:35:15 - 00:02:36:01
Yeah.

00:02:36:01 - 00:02:40:05
And so what's like the historical story, normally?

00:02:40:06 - 00:02:40:23
The historical,

00:02:40:23 - 00:02:44:06
The little ones I usually
refer to that were created

00:02:45:08 - 00:02:46:15
oftentimes before

00:02:46:15 - 00:02:50:24
we even recognize, right? Before
the ages of seven, when we're in our child

00:02:50:24 - 00:02:55:05
like minds or child status,
and where we can't process the world,

00:02:55:05 - 00:02:59:11
we can't process reasoning
why people are reacting certain way.

00:02:59:11 - 00:03:04:16
And oftentimes we're making the world
about us because at that age,

00:03:04:16 - 00:03:05:22
it really is.

00:03:05:22 - 00:03:09:03
And so even slight things
that we don't understand,

00:03:10:15 - 00:03:14:09
we we can make about us.
Like a dad coming home

00:03:14:21 - 00:03:19:07
and not wanting to play with you
when you're a kid and you don't realize

00:03:19:07 - 00:03:24:02
that he's completely stressed, overworked,
worried about money, but in your head

00:03:24:07 - 00:03:28:00
you're not worthy of his attention,
or, right?

00:03:28:10 - 00:03:34:00
And we can create these stories
that have deep, are deeply embedded in us.

00:03:34:01 - 00:03:37:11
I think my story that I grappled with
for a long time

00:03:37:11 - 00:03:40:18
was I'm a burden or I'm alone.

00:03:40:19 - 00:03:44:04
Those are two stories
that I really held on to for a long time.

00:03:44:20 - 00:03:47:14
And, we often they're so deep

00:03:47:14 - 00:03:50:17
in our subconscious,
like these stories that we created,

00:03:51:10 - 00:03:56:06
often from either one big experience
that we may not even be able

00:03:56:06 - 00:04:00:08
to point back to what it is,
or like driving on a gravel road.

00:04:00:19 - 00:04:02:07
You know, just little pockmarks

00:04:02:07 - 00:04:05:13
that happen over and over
that can create some dents in our lives.

00:04:06:06 - 00:04:11:00
But those stories are the basis of our
behaviors, whether we know it or not.

00:04:11:08 - 00:04:11:15
Right?

00:04:11:15 - 00:04:16:01
So you can imagine someone who considers
themselves to be a burden for people,

00:04:16:09 - 00:04:21:11
might be over pleasing or might get into
like codependent relationships really easy.

00:04:21:17 - 00:04:25:06
I don't want to ask for anything
that I might need, because if I do,

00:04:25:06 - 00:04:26:00
what will happen?

00:04:26:00 - 00:04:27:06
Someone won't want me.

00:04:27:06 - 00:04:29:09
And you know all of those stories.

00:04:29:09 - 00:04:32:16
And when we really take a look
at the behaviors

00:04:33:14 - 00:04:36:08
they're getting us, results that we don't want.

00:04:37:12 - 00:04:38:21
One of the things we can do

00:04:38:21 - 00:04:42:16
is go back and try and figure out
what is the story I’m telling myself.

00:04:43:01 - 00:04:46:03
And there could be little offshoots
that could mean something else, right?

00:04:46:03 - 00:04:50:02
But the core of it, your core story,
and they can be called,

00:04:50:04 - 00:04:54:02
I think, Katherine Woodward
Thomas calls them the core wounds,

00:04:54:02 - 00:04:57:02
the core wounded stories we have and,

00:04:58:09 - 00:05:00:04
for a lot of people,

00:05:00:04 - 00:05:02:18
those are really hard to identify.

00:05:02:18 - 00:05:08:06
We can identify the results we're getting,
but those core stories, hard to see.

00:05:08:22 - 00:05:10:04
And yet,

00:05:11:09 - 00:05:14:05
they're always present with us.

00:05:14:05 - 00:05:16:13
and I think they’re also,

00:05:16:13 - 00:05:19:01
unless we really get
the body involved with those,

00:05:19:01 - 00:05:22:18
I think this is one of those things
where we can do all the talking we want,

00:05:23:06 - 00:05:25:19
but it really took me doing a lot of

00:05:26:19 - 00:05:27:10
kind of whole

00:05:27:10 - 00:05:31:21
body modalities for me to really shift
those, those stories.

00:05:33:05 - 00:05:35:01
And then the present day

00:05:35:01 - 00:05:38:01
stories, those are the ones that we get
emotionally hooked in.

00:05:38:07 - 00:05:42:01
You know, someone cuts you off in traffic,
and, that idiot, I can't believe.

00:05:42:01 - 00:05:42:17
And then all of a sudden,

00:05:42:17 - 00:05:46:17
we're emotionally out
and we we we're out of our bodies almost.

00:05:46:22 - 00:05:50:24
We're kind of
in this space, in this moment and reacting

00:05:50:24 - 00:05:56:02
emotionally to, to a situation
that's happening, happening to us.

00:05:56:02 - 00:05:58:16
And sometimes we can't even

00:05:58:16 - 00:06:01:18
understand
that we're not reacting to this thing,

00:06:02:03 - 00:06:05:02
that that story
is connected to something else.

00:06:05:02 - 00:06:09:02
But we're in this space
of having over reactions.

00:06:09:03 - 00:06:12:13
And the story then becomes, oh,
that idiot, I can't believe he’s,

00:06:12:14 - 00:06:13:17
and you kind of feed.

00:06:13:17 - 00:06:14:24
Or that dumb dumb.

00:06:14:24 - 00:06:15:17
Yeah, that's it.

00:06:15:17 - 00:06:17:19
(laughter)

00:06:17:19 - 00:06:21:09
You keep on being, nice callback, Supatra.

00:06:21:18 - 00:06:24:23
But we just feed that
and I, you know, it's so interesting

00:06:25:16 - 00:06:28:21
how we can continue
to feed that emotional state.

00:06:28:21 - 00:06:32:15
It's like feeding, you know,
little pellets to the bear at the zoo.

00:06:32:15 - 00:06:35:20
You just keep feeding
it, feed it, feeding it, as opposed to

00:06:36:16 - 00:06:38:12
recognizing,
oh, I don't like this feeling.

00:06:38:12 - 00:06:39:23
I don't like being stressed out.

00:06:39:23 - 00:06:43:11
I don't like the shoulders going up
and the stomach being knotted.

00:06:43:21 - 00:06:46:14
But I'm still cycling around this.

00:06:46:24 - 00:06:51:05
Again, how do I get back in my body
so I can let that story go?

00:06:51:20 - 00:06:54:24
I remember when I first moved to Chicago
from Portland.

00:06:55:07 - 00:06:56:18
Portland, Oregon.

00:06:56:18 - 00:06:58:13
No one honks their horn here.

00:06:58:13 - 00:07:02:04
I mean, literally,
you could stop at a stoplight for ten seconds,

00:07:02:23 - 00:07:06:08
and the light's green
and no one honks their horn here.

00:07:06:08 - 00:07:07:07
(laughter)

00:07:07:07 - 00:07:09:05
So when I moved to Chicago,

00:07:09:05 - 00:07:12:08
and that is a completely different
you know, people are honking their horns.

00:07:12:14 - 00:07:16:04
You know,
it was totally different driving culture.

00:07:17:06 - 00:07:19:10
And within about two weeks of driving

00:07:19:10 - 00:07:23:18
the highways of Chicago,
I became Linda Blair in The Exorcist.

00:07:23:19 - 00:07:26:00
Now, that's a
that was really only a reference

00:07:26:00 - 00:07:28:15
that a certain number of people
are going to be listening.

00:07:28:15 - 00:07:29:01
Look at that.

00:07:29:01 - 00:07:31:04
But I was. Like,
but I watch, I watch The Bear.

00:07:31:04 - 00:07:32:14
So yeah, I get it.

00:07:32:14 - 00:07:33:07
(laughter)

00:07:33:07 - 00:07:36:09
I just felt like my head was spinning,
I was spewing,

00:07:36:09 - 00:07:39:10
I was cursing,
you know, all my fingers would go up.

00:07:40:24 - 00:07:45:08
And I recognize, oh,
what am, I was really going into victim

00:07:45:08 - 00:07:51:07
mode so quickly, and I had to catch myself
and go, oh, what is that?

00:07:52:04 - 00:07:55:08
And what if I just started telling myself,
oh, they're probably in a hurry.

00:07:56:06 - 00:07:57:09
Maybe their wife is pregnant.

00:07:57:09 - 00:08:00:23
Oh, they're having to, you know, baby,
I whatever it is

00:08:00:23 - 00:08:03:23
to allow me not to get emotionally hooked.

00:08:04:03 - 00:08:05:12
That happened on The Bear.

00:08:05:12 - 00:08:06:09
Yeah, right?

00:08:06:09 - 00:08:07:12
Spoiler alert, sorry.

00:08:07:12 - 00:08:09:11
(laughter)

00:08:09:21 - 00:08:10:17
And then the future

00:08:10:17 - 00:08:13:22
stories are those stories that we create

00:08:14:21 - 00:08:17:06
that are often the worse,

00:08:17:06 - 00:08:20:19
you know, dystopian future of what
we think is possible for us.

00:08:21:03 - 00:08:24:04
Or we have a situation and, you know,

00:08:25:01 - 00:08:28:19
everything is going to go into chaos,
because

00:08:29:21 - 00:08:31:15
of what that future looks like.

00:08:31:15 - 00:08:33:23
Instead of just staying present,

00:08:33:23 - 00:08:36:23
we have no possible
idea of what the future is like.

00:08:37:23 - 00:08:40:23
And what if we could actually build
a muscle

00:08:41:23 - 00:08:44:23
of creating a story
that might be positive,

00:08:45:13 - 00:08:48:06
like it could be amazing,
it could be wonderful.

00:08:48:06 - 00:08:55:23
And yet, boy, is that not a muscle that is
so atrophied and so weak in most of us

00:08:55:23 - 00:08:58:23
because our stories about our future

00:08:59:02 - 00:09:01:17
often go to a really dark place.

00:09:02:01 - 00:09:04:05
They sure do, yeah.

00:09:05:19 - 00:09:09:03
These stories that you're talking about,
whether they are,

00:09:09:11 - 00:09:11:20
past, present, future,

00:09:12:17 - 00:09:15:14
how did they get formed in general and and

00:09:15:14 - 00:09:18:10
why is it that they become
so limiting?

00:09:18:10 - 00:09:19:22
Is that just human nature?

00:09:19:22 - 00:09:22:00
What what's what is that about?

00:09:22:00 - 00:09:22:23
Yeah, I think it is.

00:09:22:23 - 00:09:25:19
I think all of us I mean,

00:09:25:19 - 00:09:27:04
I remember,

00:09:27:04 - 00:09:32:22
I was at an event and I had an opportunity
to meet the CEO of Vitamix,

00:09:33:10 - 00:09:37:10
and it was kind of this mastermind meeting
and so small enough

00:09:37:10 - 00:09:39:01
that we all got to engage with her.

00:09:39:01 - 00:09:42:05
And it was Vitamix at
the time, is a family, ran

00:09:42:05 - 00:09:45:15
organization,
you know, quite obviously successful.

00:09:45:15 - 00:09:47:06
But I remember asking, her name was Jody.

00:09:47:06 - 00:09:48:08
And I remember asking,

00:09:48:08 - 00:09:52:13
what does she do with her limiting beliefs
because she was obviously so successful

00:09:52:24 - 00:09:56:21
and she just looked at me
like I was a strange person.

00:09:56:21 - 00:09:58:07
And she said, limiting belief?

00:09:59:09 - 00:10:00:03
What's that?

00:10:00:03 - 00:10:01:01
(laughter)

00:10:01:01 - 00:10:02:01
That’s awesome.

00:10:02:15 - 00:10:04:01
Answered her question right there.

00:10:04:01 - 00:10:04:13
Wow.

00:10:04:13 - 00:10:05:15
(laughter)

00:10:05:21 - 00:10:07:17
I had never heard of no no one,

00:10:07:17 - 00:10:09:12
never, not have a limiting belief.

00:10:10:22 - 00:10:12:13
I think most of us

00:10:12:13 - 00:10:16:06
at some point or another will grapple
with this idea of a limiting belief.

00:10:16:06 - 00:10:20:03
And again, I think there they are often,

00:10:20:03 - 00:10:23:05
but certainly not always created in our,

00:10:23:24 - 00:10:26:20
you know, most young and tender times.

00:10:26:20 - 00:10:30:10
And they go deep into our subconscious,
but certainly they can go,

00:10:30:11 - 00:10:34:16
you know, we can create them
and they can be recreated and again

00:10:34:16 - 00:10:40:19
and again when we have experiences,
usually with people, I usually think that

00:10:40:19 - 00:10:44:07
these stories are created in relationship
with other people.

00:10:47:03 - 00:10:47:18
and which is why

00:10:47:18 - 00:10:50:18
I often think that the stories,
if they're to

00:10:50:18 - 00:10:54:22
change, are often have to be done
with in relationship with other people.

00:10:54:22 - 00:11:00:14
You know, with a therapist, with a coach,
with someone to to affirm you

00:11:00:14 - 00:11:06:02
as you are, that you know, to help you
see the possibility of a different story.

00:11:06:02 - 00:11:10:06
It's a really hard thing
to recreate our stories, I believe,

00:11:10:16 - 00:11:15:04
without someone being able
to kind of reflect back

00:11:15:04 - 00:11:18:16
the truth of who you are
or help you to see the potential

00:11:19:07 - 00:11:22:12
that's in front of you
with all the different data set points

00:11:22:12 - 00:11:23:16
that are available to you.

00:11:24:22 - 00:11:26:03
Well,

00:11:26:03 - 00:11:28:19
that is
actually leading into my next question.

00:11:28:19 - 00:11:31:21
What would be the first step
that someone can take

00:11:31:21 - 00:11:35:03
to identify the story
that they need to have rewritten?

00:11:35:21 - 00:11:41:03
I think, hey, I mean, it just always
is going to start with awareness, right?

00:11:41:03 - 00:11:45:19
To be able to take a moment to reflect.
I always say people,

00:11:45:23 - 00:11:48:20
people like to think
that we learn from experience.

00:11:48:20 - 00:11:51:20
And I just think that's not true

00:11:51:22 - 00:11:55:03
because we all know someone who is dated
the same kind of person over

00:11:55:03 - 00:11:56:06
and over and over again.

00:11:56:06 - 00:11:56:22
Me.

00:11:56:22 - 00:11:59:06
Yeah, yeah, the same kind of experience
over and over,

00:11:59:06 - 00:11:59:19
Not now.

00:11:59:19 - 00:12:00:11
and over again.

00:12:00:21 - 00:12:01:07
But right?

00:12:01:07 - 00:12:05:09
It's not until you start reflecting
on that experience that you're like, oh,

00:12:05:10 - 00:12:06:20
okay, here's what happens.

00:12:06:20 - 00:12:08:03
This is the person I'm attracted to.

00:12:08:03 - 00:12:09:20
This is what happens for me. Right?

00:12:09:20 - 00:12:14:03
So it's really that
that ability to reflect on

00:12:14:03 - 00:12:17:06
what is the experience I'm having that,

00:12:18:00 - 00:12:20:16
that I don't want to have anymore.

00:12:20:16 - 00:12:21:21
And sometimes it's even

00:12:21:21 - 00:12:25:19
not just the experience outwardly,
but the experience inwardly as well.

00:12:25:19 - 00:12:27:18
Like what's happening in my body.

00:12:27:18 - 00:12:31:03
And Chantal has told, taught me
this word, interoception, right?

00:12:31:15 - 00:12:34:23
What's happening in my body
and aware of it.

00:12:34:23 - 00:12:37:01
Where, where is my pain?

00:12:37:01 - 00:12:38:24
What is, where is my gut doing?

00:12:38:24 - 00:12:41:13
What is my back and my muscles doing?

00:12:43:11 - 00:12:46:10
Aware, It's always going to start with awareness.

00:12:46:10 - 00:12:49:10
And I mean before awareness really,

00:12:49:18 - 00:12:52:06
it just has to be a willingness.

00:12:52:06 - 00:12:56:08
Like sometimes there has to be
a willingness to be aware

00:12:56:24 - 00:12:59:21
because for some people

00:12:59:21 - 00:13:01:22
it is, it can feel,

00:13:03:23 - 00:13:08:13
kind of retraumatizing to go back
and you have to think about and work on,

00:13:08:13 - 00:13:12:20
where were these stories created,
what happened to me, what what is going on?

00:13:14:00 - 00:13:14:13
And.

00:13:16:00 - 00:13:18:14
So I think the first bit of it

00:13:18:14 - 00:13:22:00
is just a willingness
and maybe a courageousness,

00:13:22:00 - 00:13:25:11
you know, a little, a little dose
of courage to be able to look at that

00:13:26:01 - 00:13:30:01
and then working on awareness
of what's really going on.

00:13:30:18 - 00:13:32:24
It definitely takes courage, yeah.

00:13:32:24 - 00:13:38:14
And I think a lot of those limiting
beliefs are meant to protect us, initially.

00:13:38:15 - 00:13:39:21
Yeah. Right?

00:13:39:21 - 00:13:44:23
And so to let go of that guard,
that protection takes a lot of courage

00:13:44:23 - 00:13:46:22
because we don't know
what's on the other side.

00:13:46:22 - 00:13:52:03
And so I think that's partly why you have
to be willing and, and do the work.

00:13:52:03 - 00:13:55:09
And I know in your book,
because I've read it a couple of times.

00:13:55:09 - 00:13:57:05
(laughter)

00:13:58:01 - 00:14:00:08
I know
in your book you talk about your own

00:14:00:13 - 00:14:03:09
limit stories, your own narratives,

00:14:03:09 - 00:14:08:09
and how you have changed
some of those stories personally.

00:14:09:00 - 00:14:12:01
Can you tell us about some of those,
and maybe there's some new ones

00:14:12:01 - 00:14:15:01
that have come up
since you've written the book?

00:14:15:21 - 00:14:17:04
Oh, why yes I can.

00:14:17:04 - 00:14:18:13
I mean, I think I told you,

00:14:19:23 - 00:14:22:01
I had this story of I'm a burden,

00:14:22:01 - 00:14:26:04
which was so busy,
I wasn't quite sure where that came up.

00:14:26:04 - 00:14:26:23
And I started.

00:14:26:23 - 00:14:29:23
I was working with a coach, and,

00:14:30:06 - 00:14:35:05
I think for me, that story came out
almost before consciousness, right?

00:14:35:05 - 00:14:40:19
I, I was adopted, and I think
somatically, or in my body,

00:14:40:19 - 00:14:45:01
I had an understanding that there

00:14:45:13 - 00:14:48:17
my birth mother could not, did not want me.

00:14:49:01 - 00:14:53:00
And I couldn't imagine how
that challenging that was for her

00:14:53:13 - 00:14:58:14
to carry a baby that she knew
she didn't want and to give that baby up.

00:14:58:19 - 00:15:03:15
But in, you know, at some level,
my cellular being took

00:15:03:15 - 00:15:08:04
that as an understanding of
I am a burden, you know, and,

00:15:10:04 - 00:15:13:08
I for me, it was really, you know,
writing this book,

00:15:13:08 - 00:15:16:17
going through the process and working
with a coach to bring it, quite honestly,

00:15:17:00 - 00:15:19:22
to start shaping a different story

00:15:19:22 - 00:15:22:07
of I'm a blessing

00:15:22:21 - 00:15:23:18
Yes.

00:15:23:18 - 00:15:24:13
(unintelligible)

00:15:24:13 - 00:15:26:14
And, you know, it's

00:15:26:14 - 00:15:29:14
the funny thing is, you know,
you get what you start asking for.

00:15:29:14 - 00:15:31:06
And so I really worked with that.

00:15:31:06 - 00:15:32:12
And what would it feel like?

00:15:32:12 - 00:15:34:12
I mean, imagine this as both of you right

00:15:34:12 - 00:15:37:24
now, if you had been walking around
with the story of I'm a burden,

00:15:38:09 - 00:15:42:16
what that might feel like in your body,
and then try on a story of I'm a blessing

00:15:43:18 - 00:15:45:14
and how does that feel differently?

00:15:45:14 - 00:15:47:21
And I mean, I just remember thinking like,
well, man,

00:15:47:21 - 00:15:48:23
if I could walk around the world

00:15:48:23 - 00:15:52:08
like that, wouldn't
I just be lit up and be amazing?

00:15:52:20 - 00:15:54:22
And so I really took that on.

00:15:54:22 - 00:15:59:12
And then, in March,
my mom was diagnosed with cancer,

00:15:59:12 - 00:16:02:16
and I came
and I was with her for three months.

00:16:02:16 - 00:16:05:16
And I can't tell you how many times
her friends,

00:16:06:10 - 00:16:09:13
would tell me, you know,
while I was helping my mom.

00:16:09:24 - 00:16:11:11
Deanna, you are such a blessing.

00:16:11:11 - 00:16:12:14
You are such a blessing.

00:16:12:14 - 00:16:14:24
And I was like,
I want to be a burden.

00:16:14:24 - 00:16:18:13
(laughter)

00:16:18:13 - 00:16:20:12
There's just moments of like,
oh, this is hard work.

00:16:20:12 - 00:16:21:21
I think I want to be a burden again.

00:16:21:21 - 00:16:24:15
(laughter)

00:16:25:01 - 00:16:26:04
No, but it's really.

00:16:26:04 - 00:16:28:13
It's funny how I was like,
oh, there it is.

00:16:28:13 - 00:16:30:10
That's the reflection of it back to me.

00:16:30:10 - 00:16:34:22
And I can say honestly, Chantal,
I love that you ask that question,

00:16:36:01 - 00:16:39:02
I've been able
to rewrite the story of my mom

00:16:39:02 - 00:16:44:21
and my relationship during this time,
and that was a real rewrite for me.

00:16:44:21 - 00:16:47:24
And part of it was,
how do I show up differently

00:16:47:24 - 00:16:50:24
from being a burden to being a blessing

00:16:51:08 - 00:16:54:08
with her, or for myself as well?

00:16:54:15 - 00:17:00:08
So I have a I have a few adoptees
in my practice, and that is,

00:17:00:08 - 00:17:06:01
I think, the most common thought,
yeah, I am a burden or I am not wanted.

00:17:06:02 - 00:17:07:22
Yeah for sure. Yes.

00:17:07:22 - 00:17:10:10
And then how do you overcome that?

00:17:10:10 - 00:17:15:09
I love changing that narrative into
I am a blessing.

00:17:15:19 - 00:17:21:07
Because, when you think about it, you did bless
another family with your presence.

00:17:21:20 - 00:17:24:08
Your presence was wanted

00:17:24:08 - 00:17:27:08
even if your birth mother was unable.

00:17:27:19 - 00:17:30:22
Yeah, I can only imagine how difficult

00:17:30:22 - 00:17:34:01
that might be for a mother
to give up their child.

00:17:34:01 - 00:17:37:07
I don't think anyone's like here,
take my child.

00:17:37:07 - 00:17:40:07
I think you think about it
every single day of your life.

00:17:40:17 - 00:17:44:03
And so I think having that
in your mind as well,

00:17:44:18 - 00:17:48:04
I bet my mom was, is thinking about me.

00:17:48:04 - 00:17:51:04
I bet she's wondering how I'm doing.

00:17:51:04 - 00:17:54:02
That can also help to lift you
out of that.

00:17:54:02 - 00:17:56:20
I'm a burden narrative.

00:17:56:20 - 00:17:57:22
Now tell me.

00:17:57:22 - 00:18:00:19
Speaking of lifting yourself,
you have become

00:18:00:19 - 00:18:03:19
a qigong instructor,
which is amazing.

00:18:04:03 - 00:18:09:02
You started studying breathing techniques
and this movement practice called,

00:18:10:08 - 00:18:10:17
How do

00:18:10:17 - 00:18:15:03
these practices tie into rewriting your story?

00:18:17:00 - 00:18:18:19
It is, came through,

00:18:20:09 - 00:18:23:05
really the understanding

00:18:23:05 - 00:18:26:05
that the stories are not just here,

00:18:26:17 - 00:18:31:02
that the story has been lodged in my body.

00:18:31:02 - 00:18:34:14
Right? Energetically
somewhere else as well.

00:18:34:24 - 00:18:39:00
You know, qigong,
which is an ancient practice of kind

00:18:39:00 - 00:18:42:03
of moving, meditative practice,
much like tai chi,

00:18:43:05 - 00:18:44:17
is all about energy.

00:18:44:17 - 00:18:47:18
You know, chi is energy
and gong is work or play.

00:18:48:06 - 00:18:50:21
And in really understanding that

00:18:50:21 - 00:18:54:05
the stories
are stuck energy in our bodies

00:18:54:19 - 00:18:58:04
and how do you move that energy

00:18:58:04 - 00:19:02:23
or free up that energy or, you know,
transform it into something else?

00:19:03:14 - 00:19:06:17
Became I became really fascinated by that.

00:19:07:07 - 00:19:10:07
And when I came up here to help my mom,

00:19:11:07 - 00:19:14:07
I had I had previously helped my dad,

00:19:14:21 - 00:19:17:21
go through a cancer diagnosis
and end up passing.

00:19:18:09 - 00:19:21:13
And I when I said, yes, I'm coming up,

00:19:22:04 - 00:19:25:01
I also said, I'm not going to do it
the same way

00:19:25:01 - 00:19:30:16
because I completely lost myself in my
dad's illness and I didn't have any tools.

00:19:30:16 - 00:19:34:02
I didn't know how to take care of myself
during all that.

00:19:34:19 - 00:19:37:19
And so when I was up here

00:19:37:24 - 00:19:41:22
and during one of the most stressful times
that I was going through,

00:19:41:22 - 00:19:45:08
and she had some health things
that really escalated very quickly

00:19:46:16 - 00:19:50:18
and I was struggling
and I had other things I wanted to do.

00:19:50:18 - 00:19:52:13
You know, I packed a bag for five days,

00:19:52:13 - 00:19:54:05
and I ended up being here
for three months,

00:19:54:05 - 00:19:56:18
and I had a life
that I was supposed to be leading

00:19:56:18 - 00:20:01:14
outside of this. There's a question
I asked myself, and that was,

00:20:02:13 - 00:20:05:13
what in all of this is for me?

00:20:06:14 - 00:20:09:22
And believing
that even the terrible things

00:20:09:22 - 00:20:13:12
that we go through, if I can look at those
and say, well, these are for me as well,

00:20:14:03 - 00:20:14:21
what am I learning?

00:20:14:21 - 00:20:15:20
What am I set to do?

00:20:15:20 - 00:20:18:00
What am I set to learn? And all this?

00:20:18:00 - 00:20:21:09
And man, I'm going to tell you Supatra,
the moment I asked that question,

00:20:22:21 - 00:20:24:21
my whole energy shifted.

00:20:24:21 - 00:20:25:14
Yes.

00:20:25:14 - 00:20:28:14
And I started looking for
the things that were here for me.

00:20:29:09 - 00:20:30:14
And, you know,

00:20:31:13 - 00:20:32:06
I started

00:20:32:06 - 00:20:36:02
investigating so many different
healing modalities and

00:20:36:08 - 00:20:39:19
trying on in sampling and being playful
with that and understanding

00:20:39:19 - 00:20:42:23
that there may be a version
two of a rewrite.

00:20:42:23 - 00:20:45:23
To say this is one way to rewrite
your stories is up here.

00:20:45:23 - 00:20:49:01
But there's another way
to rewrite these stories completely

00:20:49:01 - 00:20:51:13
in your body and energetically as well.

00:20:52:07 - 00:20:53:07
Beautiful.

00:20:53:07 - 00:20:55:06
I love that.

00:20:55:06 - 00:20:58:11
I don't know if our listeners know
the story, but Deanna and I actually

00:20:58:11 - 00:21:02:21
wrote our books at the same time
with the same publishing company.

00:21:03:08 - 00:21:05:24
I did not know this. Yes.

00:21:05:24 - 00:21:08:24
And so we would get on Zoom
and write together,

00:21:08:24 - 00:21:12:11
and then after the writing session,
we would read to each other,

00:21:12:17 - 00:21:18:15
and she was reading all of the mindset,
information that was in her beautiful book.

00:21:18:15 - 00:21:21:08
And I would be reading all
about the body stuff.

00:21:21:08 - 00:21:23:21
And so it's funny
because we've learned from each other

00:21:23:21 - 00:21:27:08
how important, I learned from her,
how important the mind

00:21:27:08 - 00:21:30:08
is, and she's learned for me
how important the body is.

00:21:30:10 - 00:21:35:21
And I think together we really sort of
helped each other in that way.

00:21:36:13 - 00:21:37:10
I'm going to tell you so much.

00:21:37:10 - 00:21:40:13
I could not have gotten through that
writing process without Chantal.

00:21:41:02 - 00:21:42:08
Oh, I bet.

00:21:42:08 - 00:21:43:07
Ditto.

00:21:43:07 - 00:21:44:13
Same thing.

00:21:44:13 - 00:21:46:12
Chantal is a blessing.

00:21:46:12 - 00:21:48:16
I've known Chantal for now,

00:21:48:16 - 00:21:54:09
Gosh, 21 years
and every time I see her, every time

00:21:54:09 - 00:21:57:11
I'm in her presence,
I always think what a blessing she is.

00:21:57:11 - 00:22:01:09
And I have learned so much
about the body too, from her.

00:22:01:20 - 00:22:05:21
So that's proud of both of you
for being in your bodies.

00:22:06:00 - 00:22:07:02
Very proud of you.

00:22:08:05 - 00:22:09:05
You help us.

00:22:09:05 - 00:22:11:10
Yeah, thanks my friend. Really, truly.

00:22:11:10 - 00:22:12:18
Works the other way around, too.

00:22:12:18 - 00:22:15:18
So that's great from both of you.

00:22:15:18 - 00:22:16:00
All right.

00:22:16:00 - 00:22:19:00
Now that we've patted
each other on the back.

00:22:19:00 - 00:22:20:08
(laughter)

00:22:20:08 - 00:22:22:01
Can you tell us, Deanna, how

00:22:22:01 - 00:22:25:03
what kind of services do offer people?
If you could let everybody know

00:22:25:03 - 00:22:27:11
and then how they can get
in touch with you if they're interested.

00:22:27:11 - 00:22:30:11
Well it's interesting
I think things are shifting for me.

00:22:30:13 - 00:22:33:08
And I'm not quite sure what services
I'm going to be providing.

00:22:33:08 - 00:22:35:20
So, listen, things are always up in the air.

00:22:35:20 - 00:22:36:19
I do provide coaching

00:22:36:19 - 00:22:40:19
and certainly leadership development,
but it's been interesting to me

00:22:41:00 - 00:22:45:14
the last few deliveries that I've done
with leadership development is bringing in

00:22:46:04 - 00:22:48:18
more personal development
and energy tools.

00:22:48:18 - 00:22:54:22
Which are completely unexpected
and so needed and well received.

00:22:55:07 - 00:22:58:11
So if you are working for an organization
and you think you want leadership

00:22:58:11 - 00:23:02:22
development, yes, I can do the strategy
and I can do the feedback

00:23:02:22 - 00:23:03:14
and all that stuff.

00:23:03:14 - 00:23:08:12
But man, what I am finding now, especially
with things shifting so quickly,

00:23:09:02 - 00:23:13:01
is that our leaders really need,
as you say, get back in their bodies.

00:23:13:10 - 00:23:14:07
Yes.

00:23:14:07 - 00:23:17:02
They need to be able to question
their thoughts

00:23:17:02 - 00:23:21:07
and they need to be able to stay present
to what is right here in front of them.

00:23:21:16 - 00:23:24:04
So it's a really interesting shift
that I'm in right now.

00:23:24:04 - 00:23:26:18
But I offer coaching
services, of course. And,

00:23:27:20 - 00:23:30:01
they can reach me at my website at

00:23:30:01 - 00:23:34:07
Deanna Moffitt dot com, all those double letters
that are in my name.

00:23:34:07 - 00:23:36:06
I'm also on Instagram.

00:23:36:06 - 00:23:40:05
And, you find my book on Amazon, The Rewrite.

00:23:40:17 - 00:23:43:04
Wonderful, I love this.

00:23:43:04 - 00:23:44:15
I think you're actually right.

00:23:44:15 - 00:23:47:24
I just gave a talk
for a bunch of insurance agents,

00:23:48:07 - 00:23:52:00
and I had a whole list of things,
you know, it could have been how to,

00:23:52:01 - 00:23:56:01
you know, present yourself better
to what they wanted was mindfulness.

00:23:56:01 - 00:23:57:04
Yes.

00:23:57:14 - 00:23:59:15
They loved it too.

00:23:59:15 - 00:24:04:12
Like all of the comments were,
oh my gosh, I needed this so much today.

00:24:04:19 - 00:24:06:13
I feel my body,

00:24:06:13 - 00:24:08:12
was one of the comments.

00:24:08:12 - 00:24:13:06
And I think really kind of helping leaders shift

00:24:13:19 - 00:24:18:11
that thinking into being present,
like you were talking about before,

00:24:18:20 - 00:24:23:20
not just in improv,
but you know, to understand your story,

00:24:23:20 - 00:24:28:08
but also to get better at anything
you do to be mindful.

00:24:28:08 - 00:24:33:11
It does mean to be present and aware and
it's not just up here, it's in your body.

00:24:33:19 - 00:24:36:03
And I think it's vital for people

00:24:36:03 - 00:24:39:19
to really start to incorporate that
because it can make them,

00:24:39:19 - 00:24:42:19
they realize that they can be better at sales

00:24:42:20 - 00:24:46:19
because they're more mindful and
they're more present with their people.

00:24:46:19 - 00:24:49:22
So I'm supporting you on that, get out there.

00:24:50:00 - 00:24:52:06
Get these people in their bodies, do it.

00:24:52:06 - 00:24:52:19
Get it in their bodies,

00:24:52:19 - 00:24:57:00
and also just being present to their own,
our own intuitive abilities.

00:24:57:00 - 00:24:57:21
I think we've

00:24:58:24 - 00:25:00:13
we've lost that for some reason.

00:25:00:13 - 00:25:04:01
Our ability to be intuitive
and read the energy,

00:25:04:06 - 00:25:06:05
not only our own energy, but,

00:25:06:05 - 00:25:08:10
you know, the energy of the people
that are in the room.

00:25:08:10 - 00:25:12:02
Can I be intuitive enough to that,
to experience someone else's energy

00:25:12:08 - 00:25:15:20
or to sit and be present
and and feel and hear

00:25:15:20 - 00:25:19:23
the messages that are coming up for me,
not just top down, but, you know,

00:25:20:05 - 00:25:24:16
my body is always talking to me as well
and not just, you know,

00:25:25:08 - 00:25:28:08
not, I was gonna say,
not just through farts and burps, but

00:25:28:12 - 00:25:30:02
and really energetically.

00:25:30:02 - 00:25:31:06
Those too. Those too.

00:25:31:06 - 00:25:32:12
(laughter)

00:25:32:12 - 00:25:35:03
Like the messages that you get

00:25:35:03 - 00:25:38:03
or if you're willing to listen to them.

00:25:38:15 - 00:25:40:01
I think it's pretty profound.

00:25:40:16 - 00:25:41:09
Oh, man.

00:25:41:09 - 00:25:42:02
Wow.

00:25:42:15 - 00:25:45:12
We would love to pick your brain
for more hours,

00:25:45:12 - 00:25:50:17
but sadly, we are out of time for this
half of this podcast.

00:25:50:17 - 00:25:53:17
But we would love for you
to come back at any time.

00:25:53:23 - 00:25:57:08
You radiate positivity,

00:25:57:13 - 00:26:00:09
joy, just this goodness

00:26:00:09 - 00:26:05:07
and we definitely need more of that,
especially during these times.

00:26:05:07 - 00:26:08:12
So we're very grateful
for the work that you're doing,

00:26:08:21 - 00:26:11:19
and we're grateful for everyone
